I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier and am planning on upgrading the system. It fits two 6.5's on the doors and two tweeters. What should I change/buy first? Head unit, speakers, amp??? Any recommendations on which specific brand/model I should purchase? I don't need high-end, just medium range stuff at a reasonable price. Thanks.

i don't plan on getting a subwoofer, but hopefully my speakers will have adequate bass. i'm leaning towards component speakers.

changing out just the head unit will make a big difference.

i say do that first.

then get some good speakers.

then get a good amp to run the speakers.

then get a sub and amp.

then upgrade other stuff . :)

go with a new head unit, preferably with f/r/sub rca outs, then get an amp and a new component set for the front

You can get a great set of Crystal CPE60 component speakers for around 120 at sounddomain. those are very high quality speakers for the price. i compared those to others in the price range up to 200 and for that price, they can't be beat

First off, replace your head unit. The brand is entirely up to you but I definitely wouldn't buy Jensen, Road Gear, Audiovox etc. If you intend to put in amplifier(s) later, get something with high voltage preamps like 4v. I just got an Alpine CDA 7894 and I love it.

After that it depends on what you plan to do. If you're going to put a subwoofer or two in, then I would suggest getting the subs/amp and seeing how it sounds with factory highs, chances are you wont be happy with it. Subs are same as head unit, it's all about your tastes and what you're looking for, but don't get on ebay and buy yourself a set of those "1000 watt" chrome subwoofers, they're junk. If you get two subs or one dual voice coil sub I would suggest getting a JBL amp (JBL BPxxx.1).

Since you have the 6.5" opening and the place for tweets, I would go ahead and put in a component set. A component set can be pretty pricey though so if it isn't in your budget a set of coaxials would be fine. An amp isn't necessary for coaxials but they will sound much better powered by an amp. If you get components you will need an amp.

Hopefully this was helpful, good luck with your stereo.
