LOL, not surprising to see GM's craptastic Envoy (have you seen that chessy interior?) get last place :D

The GX470 and Touareg OWN!! It's also good to see that C&D isn't licking BMW's nut sack and Volvo's 5th place showing is more in line with my reasoning (which is why I'm perplexed as to why it got MT's SUVOTY award).

Way-to-go, VW! Now, when will we see a comparison between the LS430, S500, 745Li, A8, and Phaeton? (I wouldn't be surprised if VW won that one too!)

I'm also looking forward to a ML55, X5 4.6is, Cayenne comparison!

And you don't feel the need to question "Aviator"?!?!?!?!

Lets consult the dictionary:
\A"vi*a`tor\, n. (a) An experimenter in aviation. (b) A flying machine.
One who operates an aircraft; a pilot.
A"vi*a`tor\, n. The driver or pilot of an a["e]roplane, or heavier-than-air flying machine.

I'm anxiously awaiting the Ford Submariner and the Lincoln Astronaut now.

I didn't know the Lexus GX was in the same class as the rest.

The GX470 is a bad ass mofo costing near $50,000. It's based off the same platform as the new 4-Runner. It's most DEFINITELY competes in this class:

The Envoy can't touch this :D

How much was the VW?

I don't think they had a price on it since it wasn't being sold but figure high $40s. VW also had it airfreighted in from Germany just for the competition.

Nevermind, it was $46,500:

http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/comparisontests/2003/january/0301_comparo_bradsher.xml

No wonder the GX 470 was so expensive, look at this:

It also packs a ne plus ultra price tag, especially when loaded to the gills as was our $53,435 prototype, with $5475 worth of unnecessary DVD video, Mark Levinson audio, and Lexus Link telephone gear.

I'm guessing that's a rear DVD entertainment system. Drop all of that sh!t and you have a more "respectable" price of $47,960

I think the Acura interior looks rather chintzy with the fake wood and all. The Lexus was passable. The VW kicks all their butt, both onroad and offroad... Cool

And the Touareg is pronounced as "twa-reg"

I think the official dumbed down English pronounciation is TOUR-egg.
From Autoweek:
While it lacks starlet appeal, Touareg?s looks are based on the now familiar lines of those found in the Jetta, Passat and Phaeton. Despite the name, Touareg (say TOUR-egg) is someone you want to take home to meet the family.

if I was going to get an SUV, I'd either get an X5 4.4 or 4.6 or a Range Rover / maybe even the Land Rover. those things are FANTASTIC off-road!!

I've got an MDX and my last car was a Lexus GS so I can tell you the MDX interior is really cheap. The plastic wood is really cheap. The leather is not as nice as in Lexus. I'd say all in all, its about 75% of the luxury of a Lexus.

NFS4, if you took out all the extras of the MDX also like the Nav system, the cost will be $38k or about $10k less than the GX470. The base model of the MDX would be about $36k. The touring model is $38k. The base model is not that much different from the touring. It's only missing power seat memory, cheaper tires, roof rack, non-Blose stereo. If you paid invoice (wishful thinking) for the MDX it would be about $33k I believe. The GX is in a different class altogether I think.

I'm sure C&D'll revert to their old ways when it comes time to do a comparo between the new underpowered, understyled Z4 and other roadsters :Q

Though hyped-up cars get a little face time w/Car and Driver too it seems...just look at the 350z's comparo...still mad about that one :|

The envoy, and even aviator to a lesser extent don't even really belong here. How many people shopping for an X5, a Touareg, an MDX, or a Lexus would even consider a GMC or a Lincoln? Not too many I would imagine.

but unless you've taken a rover off road, you really can't appreciate just how capable these things are.. the 2002 discovery SE i was in had a VERY NICE V8 too!!!
