Car Amp & Sub Help

First, sorry about the excessive car audio help... if you know of a good and active forum to get this kind of help, just let me know. 🙂

The Car:
2001 Chev Cavalier
Pioneer 7600MP CD Player
3-way 4x6 pioneer 120w peak speakers in front
6x9 factory in back

Questions:
1. I'm looking at this amp Alpine MRP-M350 . Link used for information use only. Is this a good amp for somebody who wants some good bass in the car? I don't need anything to shake the whole block, but puts out good sounding bass to go with my other speakers.

2. What kind of sub/box should I get? Links to crutchfield or similar would be nice with the different combos. I kind of want just a 1-10" sub so I can still have room in my trunk for stuff. What do you think?

3. Would it be wiser to try and get it installed professionally instead of trying it with a friend who did his car? Is it that hard?

4. If I do go professional... Cartunes or circuit city? Can I buy the cables and everything so they don't rape me on prices?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot... I'd like to be as price concious as possible... no $500 subs please. 🙂 Less than $200 for sub/box and maybe installed?

try to find a 8" L7 or L5 kicker solo baric. they pound for their size. my friend had 2 L7 8's back in highschool and people would guess he had 10's. might wanna try a alpine type r or type s.

just bought a 15" solo baric to play with for the summer. gonna make a box that is half box and half ice chest.(for certain reasons)😉

I don't want to rice it out or anything, but when I drive to work for 40 minutes each way I'd like the music to sound good.

8" would be cool too since they're smaller, how good do they sound? Any suggestions. I'd only want one though.

1. $1/W is too expensive for what you're looking for. Reliability, a damping factor of over 50, sufficient power, and low cost is what you should look for. Ask for specific opinions on forums like

http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/index.php
http://forum.soundillusions.net/

2. Are you willing to build your own enclosure? Plywood and/or MDF (either will work in a sub application) are relatively cheap, and you get a lot more bang for the buck.

3. Does his setup work perfectly? How much experience does he have? How much beer will he want?

4. CC, no. I have no idea what Cartunes is. If you don't want to DIY (or with a friend) you're better off looking for an independent shop with good word-of-mouth rep.

EDIT: Yikes.. When I started this reply there were no responses. :Q

8" woofers - with any given excursion - will tend to be less sensitive (deliver less SPL with the same power) and have a lower maximum SPL level than a sub of greater size. You can, of course, use multiple 8" woofers, but you'd have to cut extra holes (if you DIY a box), the wiring is slightly more complex, etc.

EDIT: Doesn't sound like you want to (or can) DIY the box. With a budget of $200, your options are pretty limited.

Honestly, if all you need is a little kick this will suit your needs. I bought me gf one for her Sentra and I was VERY impressed.
I was going to recommend that myself, but it's more than what he wants to pay.

You can get it on ebay for his budget. I got mine through a friend that works at CC. I think I paid $215 for the model that retails for $349 (the clear one that comes with the wired remote).

You're not going to get much cheaper than $240, I'm thinking.

Hmm. You may be right. Well, I'd rather get that then a cheap sub/amp combo. Heck, I consider mine cheap and it was nearly $400.

I'm thinking that carbonated beverages in a sub box might not be a good idea..................

it's a work in progress:-D

in 11th grade, i had two L7S12's in two seperated boxes. the voice coil started frying on one of them so i cut the magnet off, cut the top off of the box and added two brackets on the back. also insulated it and needless to say it worked great, not gonna say what for😉

i know one or two 8" solo barics will be PLENTY for the OP, they don't move a ton of air, but people will hear you coming. if you haven't heard a pair of L7S8's then you can't comprehend the sound those little guys can make.

I got the Infinity Basslink from eBay for $175 and $20 shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...ewItem&item=5733450363

I like it for the bass it delivers for something so small and easy to install. I still have room in my car for 2 golf bags and other stuff.

He currently has one for auction at $177. If you really wanted it, you could ask him to put one up for you and see how that goes.

If you want to go cheap the basslink is your best bet. A cheap setup will sound.....CHEAP! The basslink is already engineered to work together and since you don't want window rattling bass its pefectly adequate. In fact, it can rattle you windows if you so desire.

It's not entirely hard to do yourself... in fact it's quite easy for a basic set up. My friend helped me put my simple setup in my car and 4 months later when I got a different car I was able to put it in entirely by myself in only a couple of hours. If your friend knows what he is doing, let him help and buy him lunch and a couple of beers. If you don't have confidence in your friend, take it a place that is known for stereo equipment. They'll do it right. Places like circuit city and best buy do a decent job, but they look to do it cost-effectively and sell you on all sorts of crap you don't need.

I had that amp. And it was stolen(along with an Alpine H/U and the 2 subs...) I hope the thieves die in a firestorm after somone cuts off their testicles. I used it to drive 2 12-inch subs. I liked it fine, but I don't know anything about audio, so I can't tell you if it's any better than other amps.
