i have the Viper 550 HF and it just shitted out on me for good two weeks ago. I've had problems with the alarm since i took ownership of the truck as far as i can remember, but never really thought about it. For instance, I was driving home one day on 12 mile road around 5:30 (rush hour on an busy road) and my alarm siren just starts going off like somebody had set it off. Seeing as this wasn't the first time the alarm had gone off while i was driving, i shut the car off at the stop light and just assumed that i'd be able to start it back up and drive away.

Fat chance. I tried using my remote to kill the alarm and it wouldn't go. So...i tried to start the car up with the alarm going. No chance there either...starter kill relay! So..i tried getting into the valet mode with the "hidden switch" and it wouldn't activate. Long story short, i had two cops over directing traffic AROUND me and AAA's towtruck showed up about 45 minutes later.

About a month ago (two weeks before it crapped out), my alarm seemed to be working fine/usual with no abnormal effects. So...i was coming home from work and snuck into 7-11 for a quick slurpee. I had all my windows down and i knew i was only running in for a quick sec, so i activated my alarm. 30 seconds later, i came out and tried to start my car up. No go. I did everything possible and nothing was budging. Looking like an idiot who couldn't start his car or somebody trying to steal a car, i gave up and busted out the tool set.

After scrambling for some sockets, i eventually busted open my dash and pulled the alarm from the harness. I called DEI up that day and although i couldn't furnish a receipt (purchased under my uncle's name back in AZ), they said that they do have a lifetime warranty, but i'd have to go through a DEI retailer seeing as they don't deal directly with the public. Although i've had the alarm out for two weeks now, and i'm happy they'll cover me, i was kinda disappointed i have to go back to Circuit City for them to ship it out.

Just needed to vent.

heh...i actually considered the voice module for my alarm, as well as the proximity sensor, and even the electro-luminescent window-glow picture of a viper. Maybe i'll save it for my jaguar alarm.

BTW...anybody recommend a good car alarm with remote start and trunk pop for a jaguar xj6? I'm looking to spend under $500.

wow, horrible story, sorry you've had such s***ty luck with your alarm. most people swear by vipers, but no product is going to satisfy thousands of customers unfortunately. maybe it was the original install that was bad? that's usually the case with 90% of car alarm probs. in any case hope your next one works better, make sure you get it professionally installed (certified, no cheap retail place like circuit city or best buy either). i would say go with a clifford, but they're DEI also and you don't seem to have a preference for them at the moment :)

i've heard about aladdin, maybe you should look into them.

Look into Ungo. They were/are the best in car alarms according to not only my "guy" but independent tests. They used to be independent but Clarion bought them a few years ago and kept the name. I have the lower-end model in my car and it works great. Just remember, its all about the install that makes an alarm worth the money.
