Car accident

Well, I got into a car accident this morning. Everyone involved is ok, except for my car. We were going around a fairly sharp corner on the freeway (~35 MPH turn) and apparently the couple cars in front of the Truck in front of me slammed on their brakes. He in turn slammed on his, and I slammed on mine. Too little to late. SMACK! My passenger airbag goes off, but for some reason mine doesn't.

I collect myself for a few seconds and then get out to check on the other guy. Him and his son are both ok, and besides a few scratches on the bumper his Truck is absolutely fine. My car is driveable, there are no leaking fluids and no apparent visible damage to the engine. I basically just looks like a fat guy sat on the front of it. The very front of the hood is bent down and the front bumper is pushed in.

According to Minnesota state law, the accident is my fault. Here comes a big jump in insurance premiums and a $500 deductible. This sucks, I just bought the car 5 months ago.

I guess at least everyone is ok, and that's what really matters. I'll post some pics when I get them.

UPDATED (with very low quality pics)
From the Left

From the Right with hood up

Puppies

So here are the pics. Anybody have an estimate on the repaire bill here? My Dad came out and took the pics with his cell phone camera. We didn't have anything better available at the time. It looks like the damage is only to the front bumper and the hood. There doesn't seem to be any internal damage. My Dad figured it would be pushing $4000 to fix. We'll see what the insurance says. I added the pic of my parents dogs enjoying the snow just for kicks.

Yea sorry to hear that... the law is you should allow yourself enough stopping distance if something like this happens.. what car was it?

According to common sense it's your fault too. The insurance and deductible are the price of being stupid.

That sucks. At least today is a weekend so no traffic backups

Are you from the area? It was on 35-W going into Minneapolis, just after the split between downtown exits and the campus exits.

Nothing terribly nice, just a 2003 Ford Taurus, but it was the newest/nicest car I've ever driven.

Wow, thanks for the sympathy. I do see what you're saying though, I probably could have been going slower. The other guy involved did claim responsibility and repeatedly apologized to me.

Ahh, bad place to get it. I'm actually on the UofM Campus. I know how much of a bitch that can be (was it the long, swooping turn where 36 joins 35w? )

Yep, that's the one. The cop had us drive up to Washington ave. We filled out the police report on the exit right by that chuch with the jesus mural on the side.

I was going to post about how much it's your fault and no one else's...

While I still think it's your fault, I doubt anyone here would've been able to avoid it either. I HATE that part of 35W.

I should take a picture of that some time. I love that mural.

You want sympathy for driving too fast to be able to stop without ramming into somebody who did nothing wrong? You're not getting any. Count this as a cheap lesson that everyone was able to walk away from. Learn to drive, the next time everyone might not be so lucky.

I hope that you had a cell phone with a camera and took pics of the damage of your car... and more importantly the guy whose car you cornholed.

People are all nice and concerned and what have you right after an accident. But given a few days to mull the whole thing over... way too many ppl start finding all sorts of back, neck and head aches.. and all sorts of damage to their vehicle that they 'didn't notice at the time'.

Better to cover you ass with pics at the scene.

Oh... and I am glad everyone was ok.

Don't be a dick. You have no clue what happened and you have zero right to judge.

You might be able to get it reduced to no-fault and your insurance wouldn't go up as much...

With that aside, I did the same thing expect I totalled my first free car on the last day of High School by rear-ending a brand new Lexus. 😀

Geez, drop it already.

Any idea how to go about doing this?

I have progressive insurance and use their "Tripsense" program which monitors your driving and gives you a discount based off the info. I was going to get an 18% discount for my renewal, so hopefully that will off-set some of the increase from this accident.

He never even denied responsibility. Stop being a dick, you're just searching for conflict. Quit beating your e-chest.
