Capture audio from "Line-Out" using "Mic-In"?

IIRC, mic inputs have a high degree of amplification, while line in inputs do not. I think you will probably get severe overload distortion.
 
What sort of amplification is there seperate from the +20db Mic Boost in windows settings? It seems to me I have recorded some music files through the mic-in on another laptop. All I would have done is turn off the mic boost.
