Have a captivate.. Been a long time since I've been with an android platform. What's the fastest, best all-around rom out there for it? Don't care about eye candy. Battery life>speed>looks

Looks like there are quite a lot of ICS-based roms out there. I'd be cautious though, if you're concerned about battery life. I put ICS on my Epic Galaxy S and the battery life was pretty bad, definitely worse than Gingerbread.

I've always had good luck with CyanogenMod. The last official version for the Captivate is 7.1.

I don't know man, I don't do OTA updates. Every phone works a little differently and sadly all the XDA forums are brimming with knowledge but they're very poorly organized. They have lots of useless and outdated threads stickied, and the really important threads are not stickied because the forum regulars already know that stuff.

Essentially to start hacking around with your phone, you must install a custom recovery. I've looked around the XDA Captivate forums and found this thread that might be a good starting point. It looks daunting but if you just take it slow you should be okay:

I can't tell but it seems as though the Captivate has a few issues moving up to Gingerbread. My Epic was easy - just install the USB drivers, use Odin to push a custom recovery to the phone, then boot into the custom recovery and flash a rom. Very simple. With the Captivate the steps look similar, but it seems like you also have to install some sort of bootloader Gingerbread update through Odin as well. I'd just follow those instructions and it should work.

When you got your phone did it have Android 2.1 on it?

well i had this phone 2 years ago when it came out but stopped using it a long time ago. just got rid of my iphone(3gs) last night and just wanted to get away from shitty eclaire. it's been a while since i've dabbled with android but do have experience from the infuse/g1(best phone ever)/and a few others. just been out of the loop...

thanks for your post. will look into it.

also, one more question. today i pulled the battery to turn it off while putting sim card in. it had well over 50% juice then i powered on, 10%..?

Do you have notifications turned on?
Gmail -> settings -> your email address -> check email notifications.

All the roms I've flashed lately have not included Gmail as a preinstalled app, I've had to download it from the Market Play Store, and then I have to go into Account & Sync Settings and tell it to sync Gmail.

I'm 99% sure that's what is going on here.
