Capital One removes online banking through software for credit cards

This doesn't bother me all that much because I don't actively use my Capital One card anymore, but today I received a notice from MS Money that some of my accounts needed updating. When I went to re-setup my Capital One account, I found that they have disabled online banking through software for all credit card accounts.

Why in the hell would a company do this in this day and age?

What exactly did they discontinue? Paying your CC bill online? Paying other bills that would be charged to your CC? The ability to review your charges?

Just downloading transactions with software like Money and Quicken, it seems. But that's a big deal to me and many others, I'm sure. A major benefit of online banking. Like I said, this would really piss me off if I still used the card regularly. Hope Chase never pulls something like this.

How did you "find out"? Was it an error message in the software? A notice posted on their website? I've used banking programs before, and they've occasionally told me that my bank no longer offers access to downloading transactions electronically, but they hadn't; they just had a set of servers offline.

MS Money told me that any accounts that did not have a password text box listed next to them needed updating. For me this was my C1 account and my ING account. Both of those needed removed and re-added. When I went to do this with the C1 account, it gave me an error. I went to their website, and saw that you now have to request special login credentials for Money and Quicken. No big deal, but then I saw that credit card accounts are NOT supported.

Here's the page: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://onlinebanking.capitalone.com/CapitalOne/ViewGuideLines.aspx?Id=Enrollment.GuideLines.CapitalOneAccount.ViewCompleteList">https://onlinebanking.capit......t.ViewCompleteList</a>

Ah. Well if your bank actually said that, then I'd assume it to be true. ;) I just wouldn't have trusted the program itself.

Capital One has issues. Mental ones.

They STILL don't report your credit limit to the big 3 reporting agencies for ANY of their cards. What the hell?

Having worked for this company for a year in a higher-up department, I will say that it's probably the worst company to work for for anybody who doesn't want to be a wang gobbling ass kisser (aka a consultant wanna-be). I couldn't stand working there for the year I did. A bunch of pretentious a$$hats who really are nothing more than glorified project managers managing a company that will inevitably fall. Of course, there were a few nice people there that were just biding their time, but that was the exception, not the rule.

I'll never, ever, own a C1 credit card, bank account, loan, or anything else.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust Microsoft Money either. Or Quicken or Peachtree. All evil programs designed to lie.

Quicken is what I use to manage my finances, and I use it almost every day. It occasionally gives me weird error messages about my bank not supporting online transactions, but if I try again another day, it works perfectly fine.

I've got friends that have said the same thing about MS Money.

I don't think that there's anything wrong w/ any of the software, I just wouldn't trust any of them if they told you that your bank doesn't offer something that you believe it does.

Bank of America did something similar to me a while back. They decided to start charging a monthly fee (yeah, right) to access my CC account and download automatic updates via MS Money. In response, I stopped using my BoA card altogether. There are just too many other CCs that offer this for free to put up with a monthly fee or do without it.

Yeah Chase and AMEX offer this for free. Citizens Bank does not. C1 DID and now they don't. Taking away a feature you already had is a great way to dissatisfy your customer.

I use my Chase Freedom as my daily card now. Decent rewards, like the website.

I'd never even heard of any bank removing that functionality. If my CC company stops allowing me to download the usage data I'll just close the account and take my business to a reputable company instead.

I had a capital one credit card. I canceled it after they started airing those stupid 'What's in your wallet?' commercials.

I think I read a month or two ago that Capital One was going to cut 2000 jobs, maybe this is one of the areas they targeted. I have to agree it seems to be a very backward move, but I wonder if they are interested in certain types of customers, perhaps including those who don't care about downloading transactions.
