I just had a capacitor pop,explode loudly on my p5bd. I was doing some oc'ing. Upped the northbridge and memory and vcore then dropped them all right down to default settings and rebooted and was ok for 10 mins then it went pop. I understand p5bd uses the higher quality polymer capacitors. I

Theres no sign of any cap exploded or raised up but this is what i suspect. Is there any other way to detect bad cap?

DS3 is worse board than P5B

Does the computer still work? Are you sure it wasn't your power supply or something else?

If there's no sign, then why...

well this is what happens

the psu fan spins up. the asus mb logo lights up. the cpu gets hot. the nb and sb get hot. the motherboard 120mm fans spin up but no post. so theres power going through the motherboard so it wouldnt be psu would it. i heard it can be bad capacitor if mb fans still spin up and the hearing the pop made me believe this. unless the pop came from psu and it still continued to power up the board which i doubt. usually work or dont psu. i had pci on 100/33 and i checked gfx doubt it thats too. the capacitors are filled with hydrogen gas so it maybe popped internally but was such a loud bang i expected to see some visible sign.

i ordered a new cpu and tested that and no post so im pretty sure it mb.

@agent
how can it be psu if mb booting up? psu feeds the power to mb. hehe

i ordered a new p5b deluxe now arrives on thursday. i keep the extra cpu for family.

i dont think i can RMA the board (i've removed the heatsink pipe and heatsinks and fit better cooling) or can i. shame.

i let you know if it works.

what i meant to mention is i had fitted a titan amanda tec cooler so it been running ok before i fitted this but psu should been enough to carry it all.

i don't see how it would be a problem if you RMA the board if all you did was replace the heatsinks and pipes...

i'd put the stock ones back on and let Asus know that it was a capacitor that blew.

i once had to RMA a video card to Asus because the stock cooler wasn't working (fan was not spinning). while i waited for the rma to be approved, i removed the stock cooler and added a vf700 and used it like that. after it was approved, i removed the vf700 and put the stock one on and shipped it to Asus.

The PSU could certainly still power up with a bad cap. I doubt it would sit there and do nothing like you expect. For example if it was a smoothing cap the output voltage off that cap will now look like a wave rather than a nice steady voltage. An unstable voltage could definitely cause your motherboard to not post.

After looking at JonnyGuru's website here, I see your power supply has Fuhjyyu and Jee caps, which are on the badcaps.net list of bad caps here.

thanks alot for the comments.

ok so it could still be the psu. voltage getting through but not correct voltage to post. i not encountered this before fixing pc over the years. i had a psu go bang and flash near my face when i switched it on.

if it is psu would it of blown or damaged any parts? so if it is i havent done myself any favours plugging in new parts to test. would it now sent a higher voltage through?

so something went bang and no sign on the motherboard so it looks like psu right but the signs of power going through the board made me think it was ok. so i ordered new cpu and new motherboard for nothing if so. i do hope it psu after all this. i always heard good things said about the hiper psu and they won many awards. if it turns out to be the psu i wont get another hiper.

i had cpu, mobo and 1 fan and hard drives going also titan tec cooler(total consumption of the tec is around 60W) everything was good until i fitted this tec cooler. how could it strain my psu orblow out my psu. would it have to be faulty to do this? the total watts of all components wouldn't of been so high. it good when you got spare similar parts to test but i did not. i think i been too hasty diagnosing. now its so clear.

cRazYdood: what psu doesn't use bad caps?

@Shimmishim

I dont have the original heatsinks and heatpipe to put back on they went in the bin. Yes i should of saved them. Lesson learnt.

I would get a PCpower&Cooling, they are slightly more expensive but are the best.

Depends on how much you want to spend and how long you would like to be able to upgrade on it.

Among those I would get a Seasonic, followed by a Silverstone then the Enermax.
Actually I'd look up reviews. That modular Silverstone looks really nice. Seasonic is a very popular choice around here.

It still could have been something else, but adding that tec could definitely put your power supply over the limit. I've never really been a fan of tecs.

thanks for your opinion. i probably go for the silverstone its a cracker. the one used for servers.

if i get psu with an 8pin connector would it give me any benefit over a 4pin connector? to fit in the p5bd extra 12v connection. usually i fit a 4pin connector in the 8 pin connection and the other 4 pins are blanked over.

@cRazYdood

so i see hiper on jonnyguru claims it gives out only 380w over 2 12v rails combined. so not so high pr perhaps i have overloaded 1 rail.

Are you going to want a G80 or R600? if so I would get something with 1 or 2 beefy rails. .

well it turns out it isnt the psu afterall i was right it was the motherboard but no visible damage. so i wont get until monday now.

but while waiting for another motherboard i researched psus alot and these 2 stuck for quality and heavy usage. the silverstone is awesome it seems. and corsair first entry into psus is a cracker.

i know seasonic are good. in 1 psu they lied it had 3 rails when it turns out it has 1 but i know seasonic are very good.

Silverstone Zeus ST75ZF

Corsair

this guy seems to know alot about psus
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=136602&highlight=psu

i been weighing up between seasonic and silverstone and that silverstone is a real demon it seems. so i really want that Silverstone Zeus ST75ZF. i seen a modular version of it here. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=499627
so i probably get that as i will get the g80 or r600 later on which will need 300W. I dont think i go sli yet but this silverstone will be able to handle it if i do and last many years. Seems to get good quality psu you have to spend £80+. So the hiper wasnt the problem it seems but i upgrade none the less. tecs are funny with psus.
