Can't zoom in Canon SD770IS

I have a Canon Powershot SD770IS. For some reason I can't zoom in - when I try it just makes a clicking sound, and then I get a "Lens error" and have to turn off the camera and restart it.

I checked on the internet and tried a few, most of which consist of banging the camera and hoping for the best. I was just wondering if anyone here has had/heard of this problem, or if anyone has any suggestions?

I have the same problem in my Lumix fs25. It happened because I dropped it. Haven't been able to figure out how to fix it yet.

Had a similar problem in my Nikon Coolpix L11. Had some sand particle go inside the lens area and it got stuck giving me lens error. Had to wiggle the lens a little when it was trying to shut which helped dislodge the sand particles. It worked fine after that. Tried the same thing with Lumix but that didn't help.

The zoom mechanism is broken. Send it in for repair or replace the camera - which ever is cheaper.

Thanks for the responses guys, I'm going to check out how much it will cost to repair and also some parts cameras on eBay as suggested.
