Can't write to NEC 3520 CD/DVD drive.

I am a newbie so far as writing to either CDROM or DVD.

My 3520 NEC DVD drive works just fine when it comes to reading files, such as installs, etc.
But when I put a blank CD or a blank DVD into it, any effort to select that drive for writing results in messages telling me to put a disk in the drive.

This happens when I try, for instance, to just copy a single file to it using Windows Explore. I install a blank disk, select the file I want to copy and do a "copy" and then attempt to select the dvd drive as the destination and I get an error message telling me to install a disk.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks ahead of time to all of you who respond.

I am running Windows 2000. I am not running any burning software.

I just want to use the DVD as backup copies of some files I want to archive.

I probably will use Ghost or some program like that transfer the files to the DVD. I haven't tried Ghost yet to see if it would work. I'll do that.

I just tried backing up a drive with only 7Megabytes on it to my DVD , and it appears to have worked just fine.

I guess using something like Ghost to do it was the answer. Thank you for steering me in that direction.

I am convinced that in one of my classes the instructor told one of the students to take some files with her so she could work on them at home. She asked how and he handed her a blank CD and told her to just copy the selected files to the CD unit and she did. So I am still a bit puzzled here as to why I can't do that with my drive. Perhaps I misunderstood the dialog between the prof and the student. So I am a bit puzzled.

CrispyFried:

You asked: "Did you install any burning software?"

What are some good programs for this? Are you talking about the heavy duty programs like Nero(I think that is its name)?
