Can't we all just get along?

In my many years wasting time at various boards around the internet, I have seen endless threads between Americans/Canadians/Brits and Americans/Canadians/Brits that trun into pointless flame wars for no apparent reason. All it takes is a comment in some thread (like our recent "is Canada real" thread) and suddenly everyon feels compelled to defend their country. Not only that, but those that first rise to the bait are generally not the brightest in the group, and and their stupid inflammetory posts cause other people to get drawn in. (for instance I once saw a Brit criticise the US as "imperialistic". I of course was forced to jump in and mention India, Ireland, Africa, Hong Kong, the Falkland Islands, oh and you can't forget north America...) Anyway, before you tear each other apart, remember that it's easier to make fun of Mexicans, they don't even speak the same language! wait...I don't think that was the point I set out to make...

this isn't really a problem. the threads you see are more or less "sibling rivalry". the countries are so close to each other that they can't help but poke a little fun at each other. it's not like they're about to fight wars or anything. the countries you should really be concerned about getting along with aren't canada and britain, but rather countries like russia, china, etc.

Hey, good analogies. I always thought countries like Russia, China and various Euro countries were very self-concious about being accepted as legitimate world powers. But between the U.S. and Canada and such...hell, we were are like brothers, or first cousins at the most. I love you guys! Most of us do, so excuse the occasional griping - we even have a point once in a while. :)

so, let's see here: we have in our world society various cultures/sub-cultures/sub-sub-cultures, et al...then, within these cultures we have histories that these cultures have made for themselves, and within these historical records there are records that go back some thousands of years concerning the interaction within each culture and the interaction that these cultures had with each other, including theological interaction, economical interaction, etc. but the kind of interaction that most influenced our cultures is of the subjugative or genocidal types. given that historical predilection, and the assumption that history always repeats itself, i must say that the question "why can't we all get along" is the quintessential example of pure, unadulterated rhetoric . :D

boy, that was incredibly pseudo-intellectual. note the "pseudo" ;)

i'll simplify it for the lazy ones: we'll never have world peace.

gopunk, you read exactly the way i intended. nice to know i did'nt waste my time. however, i was sort of hoping you thought my double-intendre use of the word rhetoric had more impact than my prose. but thanks for noticing. you da man.. ;)

lol! That was funny.

I don't mind Brits and Canadians, really. As long as they understand the US is #1 and they're not, I like them just fine.
