Can't watch some HTML5 videos in Chrome, says "Couldn't load plugin"

I'm having a problem using the HTML5 Youtube player in Chrome on Ubuntu. Most videos work, but I get a "Couldn't load plugin" message for some videos. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8XfP41w2Yg

Any ideas? I did a quick Google search and didn't find anything useful.

Hmm, this just happened on another site. I must have upgraded some package and screwed things up. Hmm... I'll have to get this moved to the Linux forum.
 
You shouldn't need a plugin for html5. The video you linked works for me in Debian64 and Chromium.

I never had a problem watching any HTML5 video until yesterday. I suspect I may have upgraded some package and it broke something. :hmm: Wouldn't I need the appropriate codecs? I wonder if there is a way to check what codec the video requires.
 
Should be WebM with VP8, and you should be good with that. Look at your updates from yesterday, and see what got updated. Maybe something in there will make sense.
 
It upgraded Chrome from 24.0.132.56 to 24.0.132.57, so perhaps Chrome broke.

libavcodec53 updated to 0.8.5 from 0.8.4. That seems pretty suspicious. I'll have to investigate more.
 
I have experienced the same problem.

I have two Thinkpad t60s each running Ubuntu 12.04. I updated one (I think yesterday) and it did a kernel update as well as a chrome update to 24.0.1312.57. On that one I couldn't run the lastest episode of Two and a Half Men with chrome. (Couldn't load plug-in) I could run it with firefox.

I did an update on the other one today(Sunday) and was surprised in that it said I was getting a kernel update but did not download a lot of files. (may or may not be significant) The chrome version is the same as above and it does play the above video.

If you find the solution, please post.

My son had the same problem, it was Youtube videos. It worked when I log in to his computer but not when he was logged. I cant find the link right now, but we deleted the pepperflash directory and it worked

Note: I did an update and chrome updated and did not fix the problem, so the update may not be in yet for the post was just minutes old. So I did the "mv PepperFlash PepperFlash_prob" from the ~/.config/google-chrome directory
