Cant watch asf files, help!!

For some reason, I CANT watch any online clips that are using the asf format
When I open those movies, all i see is a gray screen, the sound is fine though.

I have tried downloading wmv clips and I found out that if I rename it to wmv, I could read the file perfectly.
Does anyone know a solution to this?

I am using wmplayer 8 that comes with the windows xp, all the latest updates are installed

WinXP. That explains it. Can you watch the clips in Win98?

I think i know the problem

when i right click the loading screen, and click on about, it says the file is being playerd by mplayer 6.4 not wplayer 8

i guess the wmplayer 6.4 cant read asf file properly

is there a way for me to make the wmplayer 8 my default player for asf files?

(i have tried the option in wmplayer)

control panel, folder options, file types. Change the "opens with" to whatever program you want for the .asf extension.

the asf , wmv are all set to be opened with wm8 (and they work), but online boardcst still gives me a gray screen!!!!!

note: the files I am trying to open is asx
the file type is asf

My WMP 6.4 plays everything I throw at it. Of course I have all the codecs installed for what I play.
