can't VNC into XP box when workstation is locked..

I swear I remmeber being able to VNC into Windows 2000 when I had the workstation locked... but now in XP when I try, it prompts for the password so I know the server is active and accepting connections but when I type it in it immediately gives me a "connection closed" error. take the workstation off lock and it works fine.

anyone know a workaround ? I leave my pc on all the time, and I lock it (Windows-key + L in XP) when I am away to keep away prying eyes.. but i want to be able to vnc into it from work, etc. yet I dont want to leave it unlocked

because VNC is small simple and I can access my system from pretty much any machine running almost any OS.. dont you have to have XP to connect to a remote desktop? as in it only supports XP->XP, or can you "remote desktop" into an XP box from a linux workstation?

edit - well, I found some links in that slashdot article on how to remote desktop into XP from linux but the link was dead.. i would prefer to stick with VNC.. it works like a champ, just until I lock the workstation

besides - isnt remote desktop different than VNC? as in, when you log in, you get a seperate "virtual" desktop, like how VNC works if the server is *nix? I use winvnc because it shows me exactly what is on my home monitor, instead of a virtual users desktop

I didn't know that you were using a Linux workstation.

You can connect to a Remote Desktop through a Terminal Service client (90% sure about this). You will not get full 24-bit colour, though. Remote Desktop uses the same technology as Terminal Service but it locks the the workstation and shows you the state of the workstation exactly the way it is. It does not start a new session.

I think this is for security reasons, but I am not sure, I know i cant vnc into my win2k adv server when its locked, however i think i messed up my registry settings.



well, hey try this, uninstall it, make sure to clean the registry and reinstall it again, make sure to set it up correctly and see if you still get that problem, and if you do/dont, please let me/us know.

Sorry I don't have VNC, nor the time and inclination to download it / install it / test it. What happens if you log out on the Windows 2000 workstation instead of locking it? Does VNC work then? The workstation would be more secure with you logged out than in the locked mode anyway.

I can confirm it is possible to VNC to a locked Win2k Pro machine from any other OS (i do it all the time). I remember though I had to play in the properties of the VNC service (in win2k in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services) to make it work.

i have programs running in the background 24/7 that get killed if i log out, and plus when i log out there is a big delay when logging back in for some reason. and locking it is sufficient security for me, u have to enter the password to get back to the desktop.

eldonaontonio - thanks for the confirmation, I believe the problem may be that i dont have it running as a service, I have just the application winvnc launced with startup.. I will install it as a service and see if this fixes it

Coincidence...I just threw VNC on my Win 2K pro box at work today. I always lock the workstation when I leave.

I just tried getting in from home and it works fine. Prompts for my password, then I do the "Send CTRL-ALT-DELETE" and on its way it goes. This is running VNC from an XP workstation.

It can be set up to run as a service from the start menu.

I can verify this as well, you can run VNC on Win 2K, and you can unlock a remotely locked machine.
You also can log into and out of that machine because VNC runs as a service. (as long as you remember to set it up as such, there should be a script that comes with it that sets it up for you).
I also am curious as to the outcome of this because the only reason it would not work is if VNC specifically has problems running on XP.

Has anyone else installed VNC under Win. XP so they can verify the problems Valhalla1 has been having?
