Can't Use Windows Update Site

When I go to Start - Windows Update and try to do an update I get this message on the site:

To install updates from this website, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer. If you use Windows XP, you can see if you are an administrator by going to User Accounts in Control Panel.

Note: If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you using this website. Contact your system administrator for help with updates.

Funny thing is I'm using an Admin account. Anyone know how I can fix this?

THANKS

Was it working normally at one time? If so, give System Restore a quick try. And/or try Microsoft Update to see if you get the same result or not: http://update.microsoft.com Microsoft Update updates more Microsoft stuff than just the core Windows components, so it's a good idea anyway.

Yes it worked before, I have system restore off, I think it's useless...

The URL doesn't work...

THANKS

The Microsoft Update URL is working fine from here. Your system's a standalone system, right (not on a domain)? Given it a virus scan yet?

Stand alone, and it's clean...

Well, if you left it on you wouldn't be here asking how to fix this. Not so useless now....

Microsoft: You receive an "Administrators only" error message when you try to visit Windows Update.

"This behavior may occur for any one of the following reasons:
You are not logged on as a user who belongs to the local Administrators group.
You do not have permission to specific registry keys or folders.
The operating system cannot read the data in the %Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder."

I've been using XP since it came out and not once ever has system restore worked, plus I have seen it destroy people's systems so they had to be reinstalled also.

Anyhow, if you have something positive to contribute to help this situation, then thanks, otherwise the trolling isn't helping anything...

My point is, once this is fixed, turn it back on.

No, conficker disables the automatic update service (among others)

XP's System Restore certainly CAN repair some systems. I've used it quite a few times. I've never seen it "trash" a PC, although that certainly seems possible. But if it does, that PC was likely "trashed" already. Sometimes System Restore fixes the problem, sometimes it doesn't. In any event, it's the first repair step I'd try. It's fast and easy.

When folks have disabled System Restore, my next option is usually a Repair Install. I'd MUCH rather do a System Restore first.

I have had system restore work once in 6 years.

OP, is the computer a computer you purchased and set up, or is it a work provided laptop?

Thanks for all the replies, one thing I didn't mention is it's my kids school computer. The school they go to gave it to them and it's a stand alone computer, not on any domains.

If I put update on automatic it runs, but it won't let you download from the website and I'm pretty sure it use to before.

Are you running IE8 by any chance ? ? When you say ti won't download the updates, do you mean it does not go to the microsoft / windows update site or it gets there and then won't download ? ? If it does not get to the update web page and you are using IE8 add microsoft.com to the "use compatability settings in IE8" see if it will work then.

Just because it isn't on a domain does not mean that they didn't set some kind of group policy on the machine.

try doing a gpupdate and see if anything changes. If not go to the GPO editor and look for something that blocks windows update.
