Cant use two different nics at the same time..?

I have windows 2003 installed and I also have 2 nics installed in my computer, one for the internet and one for my xbox. To beable to transfer files to my xbox I have to manually configure the ip setting. If I turn my xbox on with the manually configured ip setting I can no longer use the internet, to fix this problem I have to turn my xbox off and disable the nic in device manager to get the internet working again. I have been playing around with setting for the past day and I cannot figure it out, is there a way I can have both running at the same time.

It sounds like you have a gateway IP listed in the NIC configuration that is connecting to the XBox. If your computer has two different gateway sto choose from across two interfaces, it can sometimes get confused and stall when connectiong to the internet.

A few questions?
How are the Xbox and PC connected? Hub, switch, crossover cable?
Make sure you have an IP address associated to each network card that is different. I would use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for the XBox and card connected to the XP. Use your local ISP IP or DHCP for the internet card. Windows should be able to figure out how to get on the internet.
If this doesn't work, find out the DNS server IP addresses for your ISP and enter them in the TCP/IP properties. This should allow you to always get out on the net. When your system tries to access any IP it doesn't know it should go to the DNS server first, which will get it out to the Internet card. Packet data should only go out to the 192.168.0.XXX network if you are trying to reach the XBox.
Also check the default gateway settings mentioned above. You should not have any default gateway settings on the card connected to the XBox.

1. xbox is connected with cross over cable
2. that the way I have it but xbox is 192.168.0.64 and computer is 192.168.0.10. other nic uses dhcp and gets configured automatically.
My xbox nic does have a default gateway, its 192.168.0.1 same one my xbox is setup on.

get rid of the default gateway on the 2nd nic. I had 2 nics in my machine, one for internet, connected to my cable modem, the other for my home network with my kids machines. I had the 1st nic setup to automatic get IP and such from the cable modem. The 2nd was set at 10.0.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 and NO default gateway. The reason I had no default gateway is because this network has no access to the net, so it is not needed.

What is causing your problem is you have a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 and when you have both nics enabled it is trying to find the internet thru that gateway, which is not available. If you leave it blank, it will not attemp to access the net thru the gateway on the xbox lan and it will work as you want.

Another option is you can buy a router and connect both pc and xbox so you can access the net with your xbox to play online with friends. I finally went this route so my kids machines have access to the net without having to start up internet shareing so I can update them, I just block the internet at the router so they can't get online without me being around, not that they need to since they are quite young still. 😀
