Cant use my smartmedia in my rio pmp 300?

When the 32mb smartmedia card is in my rio, when i turn it on it reads 64 mb (32mb internal + 32 mb card)

But when I try to access the memory from Rio Manager in windows to add songs, i get an error "Checksum error. refresh before initialize"

Any Idea whats going on or how i can fix it?
do you think the memory is bad?
