Can't use HID devices

I've got an IBM stinkpad that I can't use any usb mice or keyboards on. I've reinstalled the USB drivers, ran a SFC /scannow and nothing helps. I've tried different mice and keyboards. I plugged in a USB hard drive and flash drive and they both work fine.

Any thoughts?
 
XP SP3 all drivers are up to date. Used the Thinkpad update manager and downloaded the latest from IBM.
It's just Human Interface devices that don't work right. It will detect them, and power them and install drivers for them. If you go into device manager they show up with exclamation points and say the driver failed to load, even though the description of the item is correct. Re-loaded drivers and everything and still no go.
 
Well if you think that the case and a different buscard with a different chipset wont help. You could try a repair install of XP.

This could be related to my issue with the touchpad. The hardware ID for the pad is the exact same one as the one for a PS/2 mouse. I have been burned in OS deployments where the PnPID ended up loading Synaptic Touchpad software on a machine that had only a PS/2 mouse (had to create logic in my OS build script to use machine ID as a range of laptops before it would make that directory and driver available).

Have you tried a different USB mouse? You could be in double damage mode with an off brand that is ALSO using the same PS/2 ID. How, I could not guess considering it is through the USB controller. But dang, I have seen some really dumb driver stuff in the past.

Do you have a keyboard soft switch on that Thinkpad to disable the J point or touchpad?

Of course, that does not solve the USB keyboard... I wonder also if turning on Legacy USB in the BIOS might be your cure. Try that first.

Sounds like a bad layer driver, do you have any logitech kb/mouse sw installed?
