I'm posting on behalf of Lithium381, for the record.

I recently purchased two 300gb Maxtor drives from newegg. Put 'em in my new machine build, bios see's them, great, windows setup sees them, great. It can'tpartition or format them though .....either one, says "drives may be damaged" so i bring them to my brothers machien, same thing, not able to partition them nor format them(using an external USB enclosure, but we've done it before) is there something i don't know aobut? these drives are both PATA...i think it's JUST past my 30 days too((since i was waiting on other parts i didn't install them yet) any insight?

I think you may need SP2 installed for Windows to recognize it, if my memory serves me correctly.

I think my Seagate did that when it was in the USB enclosure. It wouldn't finish formatting so I just installed it directly into my pc and formatted it from there then put it back in the enclosure.

I am using SP2......it sees it, asks me if i want to partition/format it, i tell it yes, but it comes back 5 minutes later denying my request!

Connect the units one at a time to a know working system as either slave or master on a different channel. Download a diagnostic tool from Maxtor and run it. While there, partition and format.
