hi, i'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it's networking related, so i'll give it a shot. i'm on a dsl connection behind a netgear mr814 router. i'm running xp professional with sp1. however, when i connect to my 1and1 site using ftp surfer, i can connect fine, but can't upload any files (they time out). also, when i use ebay, i can't use the search box, the search always times out, but i can navigate through categories fine. also, using yahoo mail, i can log in fine, but then i can't get to my inbox because of a time out. however, every other computer (2 wireless, one wired) on the network can do all of the above fine. my computer is wired to the router.

i was having the problem before, so i formatted and reinstalled xp, but it's still there. i changed ports on the router, but that doesn't help either. i also thought it might be internet explorer, but opera and firebird do the same thing. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

update

still having trouble, but see the post later in the thread..

OK, I'm tired and might just be a dumd ass here, but I've noticed a little check box on some routers.

Something to the effect of "Discard Incoming Ping" or what have you.

I'm just throwing this out there, but could the problem be that these sites are using a ping to confirm your ident, and that your not spoofing or hiding behind a few hundred proxies positioned in various countries without extradition treaties? : >)

Sarcasm aside, because the other machines are getting on, this isn't likely it, but given only one pc is having the trouble, I'm grasping at straws here . . .

More realistically, are you accepting cookies? (Though this shouldn't relate to an FTP so forget I just said that.)

As for it being the network card, I could see it being an issue if it craps out when exceeding a specific network threshhold, but given the wierd ebay crap, I'm questioning that that could be it.

And finally: Do you have any crazy port forwarding/DMZ/Mac Filtering settings on the router? If so, pull them. Give the unit a hard reset, reconfigure your internet info, and keep the setup to a minimum. See if it works from there. (And never underestimate the imprtance of a firmware update!)

Good luck!

this is getting frustating bump :)

i plugged the dsl line straight into my comp, and it works...so i figure it must be the router, and the way it's interpreting my computer..but i still don't know why..my laptop with the same cable in the same port uploads fine..
