Can't upload custom avatar picture :(

Every time I try to upload a custom picture for my avatar it doesn't upload. The picture is the proper size, but nothing changes. Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah, this <7kb limit is a backend issue we're working to address. We can't allow for 50mb hi-res avatars, but we certainly did not intend to place a limit that low. Tech teams are looking into the matter and we'll get this fixed up soon enough.

Everyone, can you please test avatar uploads again? We believe we've identified and fixed the issue, but it would be of great help to have a handful of others test it as well.

Going to ping @Jaskalas here, since he went to so much work to identify the file size limit previously.

EDIT:

Please also clear your browser cache if possible before doing this. If uploads continue to run into problems after that, we'll revisit the issue.

No go. Same issue - still stuck/no progress during upload.

Forgot to mention this (I'll edit it into my other post), but see if it'll work after clearing your cache, as those were the instructions given to me by the tech guys.

I cleared the cache in Firefox (Waterfox), tried in Chromium and Edge, as well.
Tried three formats: png, gif, and jpg (60KB, 14KB, and 33KB, respectively) and two resolutions (275 x 275 and 200 x 200). Deleted current avatar and tried again. Let upload sit for a few minutes. Still not working, not on desktop (Windows 10) nor on Android (tested on mobile network, as well).

Thanks, Crono. I'll get them to take another look at this then.

To confirm, there are no error messages, right? The darn thing just hangs there, doesn't upload?

My 6.95 KB cut down .gif file continues to produce the hanged non response.

Full disclosure, the entire .gif is 19 KB, and the original .png at a "recommended" 200x200 is 48 KB. Once the issue is discovered and resolved I hope the maximum size is between 25-50 KB.

Have your IT practice a simple file upload (via script) to test basic functionality and server size limitations. If they are successful, then the issue would be found in Xenforo software settings / configuration. With smaller file sizes working, you don't have the difficult task of sorting permissions or base server functionality. It really should just be a setting somewhere. Unless it's an oddball bug in your very specific version of Xenforo. That'd be a little funny.

Actually, a Xenforo bug might explain why there is no error handling. Because that particular detail raises some eyebrows.

Can you guys give this another go? I just successfully uploaded a 212kb gif as an avatar on a test account (which is no longer animated, but that's beside the point).

This is utterly confounding. It works for us internally; we'll take another look at it. Thanks for the patience on this issue, everybody.

I just changed my avatar to this .gif, after shrinking it down to 125x125 at 6.46KB.
12.6KB version failed with no indication other than it stopped "Connecting ..." or "Waiting for anandtech.com" after maybe a minute.
I did delete my prior avatar separately before the upload attempt.

Firefox 43.0.1

There should be the file size requirement on the form where you upload your avatar, so people don't go "wtf is wrong with this?" (like I just did after trying a bunch of different times).

Also it seems a bit weird that it advises you to upload a picture bigger than 200px by 200px, but only allows up to 7 KB in size, but maybe that's just me.

Can you do me a huge favor and send the failed, pre-shrink version of the image to kng@purch.com? Our tech guys are requesting samples for further testing, because none of us are able to reproduce the problem.

The file size limit is currently set to 500,000 bytes. There are issues elsewhere that is causing this. No error messages or notices are being shown because this is not the intended behavior of the forum platform.
