Some had a separate button to push right next to the control knob - that's instead of pushing the knob itself.

Funny, I came home to find someone had come into my apartment and turned my water heater off. I suppose I should look into that...

EDIT: With my sister's old furnace, the light is pretty far back from the opening, so we had to use one of those long lighters to light it. Trial and error mostly. Don't blow yourself up.

Yep.

You push that down, turn it to pilot, get the pilot lit and hold for 30 seconds or more then let go and turn to on. But OP's sounds like the kind where you push the knob down.

Any manuals for that model online?

Does it turn off?
Maybe you need to start from off, push, turn to pilot, light pilot, turn to on?

No other smaller button inset into the large knob?

Push down half way and try. Try turning it in both directions.

Mine is finicky too. I forget the exact mechanism, but if I remember I'll look at it tonight.

First, the direction that you turn it is opposite of the direction marked on the switch itself. Second, you can only turn it in the right time (ie, I think to go from pilot to either ON or to OFF the gas must be fully lit for 30+ seconds). Third, the furnace itself and the manuals I have for it say it is an automatic light, but it isn't I need a lighter every year (I had it serviced once and the repairman was even confused by the complete lack of automatic light even though it says right on itself that it has one).

Pilot switches should be very easy - there isn't much to them. But damn someone really screwed up the design of mine.

Every year the thing confuses me. Every year I swear that I'll write the instructions down for myself next year, but I never get around to it. If I remember I'll try it tonight and post it here so that I have a permanent record. If not, I'll do it over the weekend.

Without more information (model number-either the furnace OR the gas valve) it's gonna be tough to give you the exact instructions, but if you manage to blow your house up...please post pics.

Call the repair maintainace company/person on the tag on the furnace or gas pipe and ask them for instruction.

It's probably a shrink fitting. Use a lighter or burnz-o-matic to heat the switch, causing the metal to expand, until it loosens up, then adjust to suit.
