can't system restore after processor upgrade?

hi all:

having some problems with my XPPro SP2 system - which suddenly has become crash prone in the last 3 weeks. Been rock solid for 2 years and now - arrggh!

its erratic and I can't pin down why/what is causing it. no particular thing I remember brought it about - the first couple of times microsoft indicated a driver error, but it doesn't do that now. and I didn't really install any new hardware or software except a firewire drive (generic - no driver needed) but - it seems to especially happen in large file movements (I shift around big files - 30 to 80Mb often)
Now - I wanted to simply try a system restore to an earlier point - its worked before, but... when I go to system restore I can't choose any of the earlier dates - they are there in bold for selecting, but nothing happens if I click on them (nothing at all, like they don't exist).
I did swap out my processor for a faster model yesterday - has this stopped system restore from working? can I put the old one back and then access my old restore points? or what is stopping me from accessing them? I would be a p.i.t.a to put the old processor back, but if it fixes my problem...

(the new cpu has nothing to do with the crashes - it has been happening for 3 weeks now. I've used Registry Mechanic, but I'm still crashing once a day) Event log just confuses me. can't see any patterns there. many thanks for any help.

P4 533MHz - (was 2.66 now 3.06)
XPPro SP2.

Are you overclocking your system at all. Many of the older chipsets don't lock the PCI bus to 66.66 Mhz. When you overclock the FSB of the computer, it also changes the PCI speeds. The first area people notice this is with data transfers like you are experiencing. Keep your FSB setting stock. I am not sure why The system restore is not working.
This is a guess, Hope it helps

nope. not overclocking at all. this system has run fine for 2.5 years. so its baffling.
what I need to know is that if I put in the old processor, will I get access to system restore ?
am running mem test now, after 1 hour it done 15% of my 4Gb... it's gonna be a long day!

What motherboard do you have? Does it support hyperthreading? Does your bios support your new CPU? You may need a bios update since you changed the CPU..going from a non-hyperthreaded to a hyperthreaded CPU makes me suspect it could be related. Could be related to that firewire drive as well. Have you tried with the firewire drive disconnected to see if the problems go away?
