Can't switch to 1600 x 1200

I have a viewsonic PT813 on a ATI 9500. Both should support 1600x1200 at 75Hz. When I swich from 1280 to 1600 the desktop gets bigger and I can no longer see the edges of it. It seems to have enlarged the desktop to 1600 but I'm still running at 1280. I've never had this happen before. Any ideas how to fix it?
 
This is under windows XP.

I'm not familiar with DDE settings. I don't seem to have anything about DDE under the 'Display Properties' or the advanced tab.

Like I said, both support 1600 x 1200 at 75 Hz
