Ok here's the deal. Ever since I got my new video card (back around christmas) I've had some video problems while trying to run certain video games. The only problem I can't fix is with Half-Life. here's what happens. when I run it my screen flickers like it's turning off. nothing happens for a few seconds, then a little information box pops up that says "out of scan range".

When I check the support built into sierra utilities, this is the message I get

"The Sierra Setup routine has determined that this computer system does not have the correct Windows Video driver installed to operate this Sierra program title. For optimum display performance, a majority of Sierra titles requires an SVGA-256 color Windows driver that was specifically created for your video card by your video card manufacturer."

Now I have a Rage Fury Pro video card with the most recent drivers for it (but I've tried at least 4 different drivers). I'm at my wits end. I have a friend who has just a regular Rage Fury, and he has no problems with it. The only reason I care is because Blue Shifft just came out and I wanna try it out. If anyone can give me any idea of what I can do, please tell me. I've run out of ideas. Thanks in advance.

**EDIT** Problem fixed. Thanks for the help everyone who gave answers. Double thanks to MustPost for giving the answer that fixed it. **EDIT**

The only thing I can think of (short of buying a new card) is to try installing (or reinstalling) the drivers for your monitor.

Windows might be limiting your video card capabilities if it thinks your monitor isn't able to handle them.

Edit: Also, you might try deleting all the .cfg files in your Half-Life/Valve directory. If you installed that card after having already installed Half-Life, it's possible that it was set to a display mode that worked with your old card, but not your new one.

Deleting the .cfg files should reset the vid settings (and also all of your binds, unfortunately).

Good luck ;)

Also, try switching to 16 bit color before starting the game.

Have you checked to see if HL is set to use a resolution greater than what your monitor can handle? "Out of scan range" implies that your monitor can switch to the intended resolution.

Just my $.02

check to see if there are "experimental" drivers for your card to run GL
maye even downgrade driver version for compatibility

Yea, it does sound like you are using the incorrect Monitor Inf or perhaps none at all.
Check here: Right click on desktop, choose properties, settings tab at top, under where it's labelled "Display" does it list a monitor? Does it list the monitor you are using?(Standard yadda yadda ya is no good as well)

If your monitor is not listed, click on "Advanced", then click "Monitor", click "Change". From there it is like installing drivers for anything else. You probably received a cd with your monitor if you bought it new, so use that if you have it. Otherwise, you'll have to hope that Windows has the correct driver or you may need to go to the monitor's manufacturer's website and download the Inf for your particular monitor.

Also, if you haven'y tried it, get the latest HL patch.

thank you for everyone who helped. I changed the refresh rate to adapter default from optimal, and that did it. Thanks again.
