Its quite sad actually. I really like to sleep on my stomach and it tends to be very comfortable except for one thing. Whenever I lie like that I can feel my heart bumping against the bed and then the worse part is hearing the blood go through my vessels in my ear :( Drives me nuts. I dunno why it suddenly started, been sleeping on my stomach for many years with no probs :)

anyone else affected by this?

nope don't get that. I used to when I was younger but not anymore. For some strange reason, I've been sleeping on my stomach a lot lately, something that I never did before. Almost every morning, when I wake up, I have an imprint of my hand on my chest.

Have you gained weight recently? That or something else could actually be causing your heart to be working harder and sound louder. Or this could be the start of your Howard Hughes like dementia wherein you soon will be carrying around your bodily wastes in mason jars.

There was a study a few years back which looked at personalities and sleeping positions and the corolation beweeen them both.

I don't know what the study was called though

no I havent gained weight. I think it all started when someone told me (class discussion) that you can hear the blood going through your vessels if you put your ear down like that. I suppose now my brain want to always hear that driving me nuts :(

I hear sleeping on your stomach is bad for you anyway

I sleep on my stomach, quick, call a doctor!

sleeping on your stomach is bad for you back. i know because i have back problems and my doctor tells me it's bad, lol. the spine is curved in a position that is made for flexing forward a little bit. sleeping on the stomach makes ur head turned for long periods of time with pressure being exerted onto it. this causes a bend in the spine and will eventually cause back and neck pain in the future. oh well, screw that. sleeping on my belly is tooo comfy! :p

It depends... sometimes my neck hurts after too long. I have a really hard time falling asleep though, and it'll take me at least 45 minutes if not longer.

A lot of us when we are young tend to sleep on our stomachs and are comfortable that way. Then when we get older, it's just not as comfortable and we start sleeping on our sides or back. The only reason I can think for this, is that when we are young, we're little - we don't weigh very much. This means that our body weight does not sink us very far into the bed, so we remain relatively flat, a position which the body has no problem with.

When we get older and heavier, however, the body sags in the middle of the bed due to the difference in pressure near the torso. In this position, the back is bent slightly backwards, and the opposite ends of the body are also pressing against the bed with uncomfortable force. This position is unsuitable for sleeping conditions, so we favor sleeping on our sides, where the body rises off of the surface of the bed more, and back bending is less of an issue.

If you have a spring mattress, little things like your heart beating can reverberate through the mattress and make its way to your ear pressed against the pillow, which can be distracting.

I read a recent article that was talking about what positions are best. Apparantly the new thing is whatever your body finds most comfortable is the best, because . . . well there must be a good reason why your body finds that particular position comfortable. The exception, of course, was for people who were grossly overweight with heart problems. However those people probably wouldn't find sleeping on their tummy comfortable.

When I was in grade school I liked to sleep on my stomach but I really can't do it anymore. I usually just sleep on my back, sometimes I will doze off on my side in a spoon-friendly position however I think at night I usually flip back over on my back.

However, in the morning when I do not like to get out of bed I do have a tendacy to doze off (or try to at least) while on my stomach.
