Can't shut down

When I try to shut down the screen will darken then brighten back up like it is restarting. A error message will appear stating that on of the programs has not shut down. The only way I can get it to shut down is Ctrl-alt-del twice. HELP

Oh yeah my daughter got hit with a e-mail virus today on AOL. She loaded it last night before I had a chance to load anti-virus. Just finished building PC as a second PC.

whoa... AOLs allows scripts (vbs) to run in their email or do you mean she downloaded some kind of virus/trojan and she executed it?

If the shutting down problem started right after that incident, then I would scan the computer using anti-virus (with updated definition files).

then I would Cntl-Alt-Del and look for any unusual programs running under windows; however, most of those kind of viruses hide themselves so that they can not be found.

if nothing unusual, then i would check the startup folder for any unusual programs. the startup folder is in your Start > Program Files > StartUp... make sure there aren't any weird looking programs you've never heard of before in there.

another thing i would check is the windows registry.... Start > Run > type in 'regedit'
look in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ... Software ... Microsoft ... Windows ... CurrentVersion ...
and look in Run / RunOnce / RunOnceEx / RunServices / RunServicesOnce
these are programs that are loaded as windows boots up. most of the programs under there are probably important, but make sure you don't see any unusual programs in there. caution, i wouldn't delete anything in there unless you are 100% sure that its not supposed to be there.

sorry this had to get so complicated, but i've had experience with those AOL kids/jokers who love playing practical jokes by making their own little program in visual basic that did small tricks on your computer. good luck

I was not home from work. She opened a picture. Would it be easier to run fdisk or format on my hard drive. I do not have many programs on it and no data.
