I have just got ADSL put on, after being on 56k for years.

i had the internet shared between the two computers i have in my house.

now on ADSL it wont share!!!!

everythign checks out fine, the LAN is working, the ADSL is working & is even shared & coming thru on the second computer as the internet gateway, everything looks good, except that i cant connection a web page on the second computer.

the page simply timesout.

i check the status & if i am asking for a webpage on the second computer, the send & receive for the LAN is going up & up, but the ADSL isnt sending & receiveing at all.

any ideas ???

i was so excitted today to get ADSL but now i cant even use it , as my computer is the second one.

thanx all..

May be the Browser is still set to use the DialUp. Look at the Internet Option.

Well, first off you'll have to give more info. What OS's are in place and where? Are you using ICS? Are the clients using DHCP? Are you using a router? If you have Win2k, start, run, enter ipconfig -all > ipnfo.txt
Then find the file you just created (ipnfo.txt) and copy/paste the results here. I think you can do the same with Win9x, but the command is winipcfg.exe.
Can you get to a website if you enter the ip address instead of the friendly name? (then its a DNS problem)
Do the clients have a default gateway specified? It should be the ip of the computer with the direct connection.
If you are using a software router such as win2k, check the NAT is working and that you aren't filtering out the wrong ports. (i.e. port 80, 21, 22, 25, ect..)

ok , sorry

i have XP Pro on both, i have used the ICS wizard & tried manully setting up IP's, gateway address's etc. The LAN does work fine, has before & continues to; ie i can ping each computer back & forth no probs.
i do have the client on DHCP, but like isaid i have also manully configured it too (willing to try anything about now)

nope, no router, using Xover cable between the client and host, two NIC's in the Host computer (and i have tried using a combination of different NIC's)

yes i have tried ipconfig cmd, but the DOS screen just flashes up on the screen & is gone, no way of reading it. what am i doing wrong there??

i did a tracert & the client was able to get the same responses as the host. Also, when i try to access a website from the client, it seems to find it alright, by saying "web site found...." then openning page, but no page arrives, the little green bar just keeps on filling up (slowly!) but no pics or anything.

tried ip address's. the DNS appears to be a ok. especially when the fact remains that the host can surf the web no worries, its just the client cant. i even tried to put the ADSL modem and all on the client , so their roles where switched. worked fine for the (new) host.
so i managed to re-create the same situation.

the set up , sets up ok, theres an icon in Network Connections of the connection on the host, plus the additional LAN connections, giving two LAN connections.
the Gateway is specified.

also i should mention it is not a permanent connection, its one of these PPPOE connections, have to connect each time i turn the computer on

help would be greatly appreciated!!!

thanx !!

To use the ipconfig command, try start, run, cmd. This will give you a "dos" window. Then type ipconfig -all. This really sounds like a gateway problem. Either the client is looking in the wrong place, or the host is not passing packets. I really haven't used XP in this capacity before, but it is my understanding that the ICS host will have a static ip for the internal network adapter and start running DHCP/DNS for the clients. So the client should DHCP. Make sure that NO information is in the clients' TCP/IP properties. It should all be set to Auto. Now for the tricky part. The hosts external network adapter is obviously DHCP for the DSL. If this is how you are currently setup, then the problem is either a misconfigured ICS scheme or the packets are being filtered. Lets assume that ICS has been setup correctly for the correct adapter. Then check that the appropriate ports are open. I think in XP you get there by right clicking network, select properties. Then select the first NIC and right click, properties. Now I'm a little fuzzy exactly where it is, (I don't use XP) but I think on the second tab there is a section that will allow you to adjust packet filtering. Make sure port 80 is open. Open both NICS.
Good luck!

also i found the manual online for the ADSL modem. it says to punch in the ip 10.0.0.138 into your browser to bring up all the options you have & can change, done that & it did. but looks a little complicated for me. maybe it can be useful to change a setting i need to get this thing going. i see a few settings i thought might need changing , but wasnt sure & didnt want to make a mess.

heres the manual if anyone can please have a look for me manual

i ran tracert from the client & host & appeared to get the same reponse. that seemed strange, but promising to me.

also , not sure if i said this already, but the client, when accessign a web site, does find the site & even gets the "openning......" but then just times out there after awhile.

someone else said that the Provider can block packet forwarding & therefore ICS. is that true ?? how can i check if thats the prob? & would a hub or something help by pass that ???

thanx everyong who responds !

much apppreciated
