HELP! I can't get my Plextor 8432 to boot up with DMA. I went to Via Tech and I did what they suggested. Uninstall the Via Bus-Mastering and use the Win98SE instead. Of course my Device Manager shows I'm using the Via Bus Master but in the registry I show Windows version. I have DMA checked in the Device Manager/CDRom properties and it stays when I reboot. But when pausing my boot screen, I see the Plextor as PI0 mode4. What gives?

I just upgraded my system and did'nt have any problems with DMA before. Any suggestions?
I'm tired of searching all over the planet! :frown:

AMD T-Bird 800MHz, FIC AZ11, 192megs SDRAM, Win98SE.

after installing the VIA BusMastering software, use the DMATOOL.exe they install

I tried the VIA bus master and this did not work. VIA Tech suggested I use the Win98 bus mastering and that should fix it. Well, it didn't. When you said install the DMA tool.exe; what exactly are you talking about? I think that was the same thing I installed off of the cd. I also went to the FICA web site/tech support and they suggested installing the latest 4-in-1 update. I tried that too. My Plexy is STILL running PI04 with "DMA" checked in the device manager. AAGGHHHHH!

I have an ASUS A7V and a Plextor 1210A. I cannot get DMA to work on the controller. It is displayed as PIO Mode 4 in the BIOS. However, the drive is supposed to support DMA Mode 2, Plextor support blew me off and told me PIO Mode is fine. I am pissed as this affects the performace of my computer with ridiculous CPU ussage. I believe there are a lot of problems with controllers and plextor drivers regarding DMA.

I had to update my IDE drivers for my ASUS Mobo before I could finally enable DMA for my Plex.

OK, here's the trick I recently found, because I was looking for a way for the bios to detect my plex 12/10 as dma mode 2 for a long time. (used to be pio-4)

With the drive came a little extra jumper cap (mine was in the bag with the little metal thing to open the tray if it's stuck), and on the back of your drive are 2 pins on the left of the spdif cd connector. Just put the jumper cap over these two pins, and taadam :) bios will detect it as pio-4 AND dma-2

I have the TDK version of the 1210a...
a.k.a. "a little touch of CDR burning heaven"(TM)

The jumper trick worked for me when I installed it a few weeks ago...
Sugadaddy's advice should be right on.

Isn't it weird that this tidbit of info isn't on the plex/tdk support site and that it's even a secret to thier tech support?

Let us know if it works for you!

Thanks Sugadaddy! I will give this a try!
I was just about ready to reformat the whole thing! That would take days to re-install. I hope it works!

Sugardaddy!!! You are the man! I am currently running my Plextor 1210A in DMA mode 2 in win2k after enabling the correct settings and adding the jumper to the "Mysterious Pins" on the back of the drive. I can't tell you how much I apreciate this advice!!!

Thanks Sugardaddy!!!!

I just got an Iomega 12x10x32x CDRW and since they say its a rebadged plextor, did the trick too buy putting jumpers in the 2 pins. Now the drive shows up as DMA 2 under bios when I boot up. However, if I set DMA in win98se on the cdrw, the drive won't be detected anymore (in explorer, cdrwin, nero, any program), even tho it is still there under device manager. After I unchecked DMA in win98se, the drive was properly detected again. My question is this. Since it is listed as DMA 2 in bios and bootup, is my cdrw already in DMA2 mode when it boots into win98se even tho the box isnt checked? thx
