Can't set Chrome as default browser.

A littel backstory. I installed Chrome on my vista machine the day it came out. I set it as default and have used it with no issues. over the weekend I reinstalled vista just to have a clean install. Installed Chrome and it was fine.

Today I downloaded AVG Free and installed it but now I have all my links open up in IE. I've tried to set it in the options in CHrome but it still says "Google Chrome is not currently your browser". I click the button to set it but it isn't taking effect.

Anyone know how I can force it?

Start/All Programs/Default programs

Click on "Set Your Default Programs".

In the left pane, select the program you want to make default. In this case "Chrome"?
In the right pane, click on "Set this program as default".

If that doesn't work, uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome should do it too. I always have this problem when installing multiple media players. Each one wants to be your one and only.

Strange. Chrome isn't listed in the program list.

In that case, I suggest you ask this thread to be moved to the OS forum.
This is really about Vista and not about Chrome.

How about this?

Open a web page and save as html to your desktop.
Right click on it and under "Open With", click on "Choose Default Program".
Click on "Browse ...".
Browse to where you installed Chrome and select the executable.

I'll try when I get home.

Doesn't Chrome ask you if you want it to be your default browser in the beginning?
Yes, and it worked fine until I installed AVG on my machine. And I'm positive that i didn't purposely tell AVG to change anyhting. I also noticed there was a yahoo toolbar installed in IE with an AVG drop down thingy.
I am pretty sure AVG did this. I may also just uninstall and reinstall AVG.

Well, uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work.

I also tried your idea Navid about saving a webpage and then going back into and right-clicking and setting Open With to Chrome. No luck there either.

it's strange because before I formatted this pc, everything was fine. This is only a minor issue but is annoying.

Is there a setting somewhere specific to outlook to make links open in a certain browser??

What did exactly happen?
What extension did the file you saved have?
Did Chrome open the file?
Did you select Chrome to always open files with that extention?
What happened then?

But, if you double click on an html file, does it automatically open with Chrome now?
That was our only objective from what we did so far.

If the answer is yes, repeat what is in post 2 of the thread. Is Chrome still not listed?

First, double click an html file and report if it opens with Chrome or not. You did not answer my questions.

Then,
Start/All programs/Default Programs
Click on "Set program access and computer defaults".
Select "Custom".
Expand "Custom".
Under "Choose a default web browser", make sure "Enable access to this program" is set for "Chrome".

Now, check the list.

Can we stop talking about Outlook until your default web browser is successfully set?
Can you answer the questions that are asked?
🙂

Just stopped by yhte house and Chrome is starting when the html file is clicked.

However, as I said before, Chrome is NOT on the list in the Set your default programs nor is there a choice to select Chrome under the Custom /Choose a Web browser in the Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. IE is the only browser listed.

And I am mainly concerned about outlook at this time so I can't really leave that out. :frown:

I am out of ideas.

Chrome opening an html file by default now, but, not showing up in the list of programs in the Vista menu is neither an Outlook issue, nor an AVG issue nor a Chrome issue. It is a Vista issue.
You need to resolve this first. Then, the Outlook problem will be solved too.

I would post this in the OS forum if I were you.

thanks for all the tips. I am almost positive it started right after installing avg. I may uninstall it this weekend just to check.

i appreciate your help.

I understand that AVG caused the default browser to change.

But, Vista should allow you to change it back now regardless of what changed it first. It probably does. I just don't know how.

By the way, when you install AVG, if you choose custom install, you can uncheck the Yahoo toolbar installation, or whatever toolbar it is.
