I am an ectomorph, which means it is hard for me to gain weight no matter how much I eat.

I am trying to gain a meatier/bulkier body, but it is pretty hard for me.

Any tips to gain weight since I do somewhat eat a lot, but I am not seeing more meat on me.

1. Go read the Health and Fitness forum here.

2. Not eating as much as you think you are. Track your calories and macros.

3. Lift heavy weights to put on muscle mass (this will take years, so get ready for dedication), cardio is a waste of time for a multitude of reasons but definitely does nothing to improve muscle mass because it consumes it instead usually.

Cease all unnecessary physical activity. Get a desk job and drive to/from work. Eat like a teenager and be sure to enjoy desert every day. Replace water in your diet with soda. Keep lots of salty, calorie-dense snacks on-hand and eat them to increase your thirst.

Don't worry about tracking your calories, just eat until you feel really full - mostly meat! Also take up a hobby like video games or movie marathons. Try not to get enough sleep. Do things to increase stress in your life.

That is about the opposite of the advice my doctor gave me so it should work out great.

(Seriously, ask your doctor instead of a computer forum)

Food ideas:

Weight gainer shakes
Milkshakes
Milk
Cheeseburgers

Anthony Ellis has a pretty good program, if you can get past the cheesy website:

Bodybuilding workout routines is what you want to go after to pump up your muscles. Calisthenics Kingz is my favorite program - bodyweight-based calisthenics that don't require a gym. Ignore the low production quality of the website & videos; the content is actually quite good:

Visualize your muscles like a balloon: if you do strength training, you'll get really strong, but not necessarily really big. If you do bodybuilding (lower weight, more reps) that inflates your muscles like balloons - it makes you look bigger (but you don't usually end up as strong as if you were doing strength training). Eat weight-gainer foods & do bodybuilding. A year from now you'll be a lot bigger than you are now.

It has been less than a year since my health changed for the better and I started gaining weight. I'll share some general ideas that I've learned along the way.

First, is your stomach in order? If your digestive track is not stable then you need to correct that. If you're eating foods you cannot tolerate then they will pass through you too quickly and harm your health. If this is an issue then work out a list of foods that agree with you.

Second, three square meals a day. That's no lie. Do not skip breakfast. Snack in-between when ever you feel hunger. It adds up over time.

Third, have you seen a doctor about it?

Remember you need to eat the correct food, not just more food.

Go to a doctor as you may have a tumor or a tapeworm.

I had lot of trouble gaining weight many years back, oddly I did what most people do to lose weight: I joined the gym. Using up excess energy enabled me to have a larger appetite so I could eat more. I only went for a few years but the effects seem to have been lasting. Maybe that's not what did it, but it may be worth a shot. Start working out for an hour every couple days. Muscle is also heavier than fat, so there's that, I guess.

Also if you do aerobic exercises as well (like biking, jogging or jumping rope) on the same day as weight training do them *after* you do your muscle building exercises.

you just have to realize that genetics are not in your favor and they make a huge difference for athletism. you can still try to gain some more weight and such.

what ethnicity are you?

Use some sort of food tracking app that has a lot of common food choices in it's database. The livestrong myplate calorie counting app is what I use. It will calculate a daily calorie goal based on your height, weight, gender, activity level, and desired amount of weight gain per week. Eat every day until you meet or exceed that calorie goal. Work out hard while you're doing this to maximize muscle gain. Remember to input your workouts into the app as well as the food you eat because they will count against your calorie goal.
