Can't seem to install CPU fan...

Hey, I got a Q6600 and am trying to install it on my GIGABYTE GA-P35-DQ6 motherboard. I got the CPU in fine, but when I try to install the heatsync/fan I seem to only be able to get 2/4 pins in (2 on any one side), and then the otehr 2 seem to not want to go in (on the otehr side). It almost seems like the CPU is sticking up too high and that the fan cannot rest flat enough.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Make sure that the black pins are raised to open position - just confirm with the arrows on the ones that are snapped on already.

Then look closely where you are inserting the remaining pins, making sure that "both halves" of the Tip are in the hole - and gradually increase the pressure, just like if you were compressing the RAM module, until you hear a "click".

Ensure that you are following the pattern "across", just like tightening the lug nuts in a car wheel.

Hope this helps.

Reseated CPU, and got it. Still was equally as hard as before so dont think the reseating did anything - just REALLY had to push. That thing sure isn't easy - and I'm a 6'0" 180lb athlete who can lift like 200 lbs. Crazy -- thought I was gonna break it.

Thanks for the help.

I remember when I installed my Ninja B heatsink (same mouning system as the stock Intel) in the same motherboard. It was a royal pain till I figured out that the pins had 2 different orientations (insertion and removal)/ On my initial attempt 2 out 4 were in the correction orientation. I couldn't figure out why the other 2 kept popping out. After some reflection (aka swearing, throwing things, etc), I figured out my error and was able to install my heatsink. The real fun occurred when I decided to undo the heatsink. You have to rotate each pin counterclockwise - not easy since the lower left one is covered with the heatpipes.

Glad you got your heatsink in :D

Hey FSH42NA

i have the exact same heatsink on my Asus 939 board, and i am thinking about the P35-DQ6 motherboard for my Q6600....it looks really tight around the heatsink for the ninja...any issues (besides the pin issue mentioned above) about clearance or other stuff...any input would be greatly appreciated

i hate those pins for a big heatsink like the ninja.

i went and bought a TT bolt thru-kit, added some washers for extra pressure to the spring and mounted my ninja like this:

the ninja isnt cutting with with my quad core for oc'ing so it wont be around for too much longer. just figurin out about wc'ing or not.

but that lil mini-mod i did makes it safe to move my case with the ninja mounted. it also adds more pressure to the heatsink, always a good thing.

Heatsink mounting pins don't seem to like the Gigabyte P35 boards very much... I had a lot of trouble mounting my Scythe Mine onto my P35-DS3R.

Kevin,

Once you get the pins aligned correctly, mounting is fine. With the optional (not if you plan to OC) fan installed, 1 dimm slot is covered (not a biggie, just unclip your fan if you need to remove/install a dimm). The pain starts if you have to uninstall and I had to stick my not too big fingers around the lower left corner to try to grab and rotate the pin to the uninstall orientation. Talk about sweating like a pig.

If you are OK with the above, I personally love this heatsink. Nice and quiet. I upped the stock Scythe 120mm fan to another higher cfm version Scythe and it's still pretty quiet. I don't plan on some massive, barn burner overclock so I can live with those who say I should get a Tuniq Tower or a Thermalright Ultra Extreme instead. Quiet is more important to me nowadays.

Hope this helps:D

Hey FSH42NA,

Thanks for the heads up. I plan on running the Q6600 stock, and i don't mind losing the first dimm slot to the fan...i may get 2 x 2GB ram modules and place them in the 2, 4 slot config.

I am worried about support for the P35 board (i heard Gigabyte will discontinue one of the P35-DQ6 boards (either the ddr2 or ddr3 variety) once the X38-DQ6 ships later in aug or early sept. I may be patient and hold off for the X38 board

At least i am glad to hear that the Ninja has not real installation issues so to speak

Thanks for you input

you dont lose a dimm, you just have to remove/add the fan when/if you want to remove, re-seat the ram.

i had ram in slots 1&3 now i have ram in all 4. i just had to remove the fan each time i installed it, which isnt exactly often and no biggie.

also, i strongly recommend getting a TT bolt thru kit and mountig the ninja that way as i posted above:
