Can't seem to get Tbird to unlock with pencil trick.

Well I took the CPU out, cleaned it off, redid the unlock, and remounted it and still nothing. Second time I've tried this in two days. I just don't get it, the first time I did the pencil trick(about 3 years ago) it worked and the proc showed as 1333mhz instead of 1000mhz. After about 3 weeks though it jumped back down to 1000. I hadn't tried doing it again until now and I've got nothing. I made sure I erased the old graphite and cleaned the bridges with rubbing alcohol; I even put tape over it. :brokenheart:

Proc:

AXIA0114WPFW

If it's not the same pencil you may be using one with too much clay content to work. Mechanical pencils never fail, but I can't remember if it was the HB lead or not that was a good pencil for the purpose....

To answer the questions:

No, the FSB was still 133.

I used a mechanical pencil with .5mm HB lead.

The 1.33 was just what it instantly unlocked to the first time, I didn't even try to push it.

My tbirds a AXIA. won't even go over 1.292ghz without prime95 errors. My multipler won't even go pass 8.5x:(.

I used pentel "hi-polymer" 5mm HB lead on mine and it always works for me.

If that doesn't work, try a Papermate American #2 pencil. I used that on my friends tbird and it worked fine

I used a regular HB #2 pencil to unlock mine. I think I only redid it once during the 2.5 years I used my Tbird, and that was just cause I had the heatsink off anyhow and figured I may as well do it again.

My 1GHz AXIA would do 1.38GHz @ 1.85v.

Go get the 2B or softer pencil lead for the mechanical pencil.

Well with the pencil it was unstable, random hard locks. I cleaned it and didn't try the pencil trick again. Locked up once about 30mins later but hasn't done it since, been about 8-9hrs.

As long as it's stable now, I'm cool. I'd rather have a stable slower CPU than an unstable fast one. I'm gonna be getting an A64 in a few months anyway, had this system since May 2001, what could a few more months hurt?

My 1GHz AXIA would do 1.38GHz @ 1.85v.

Mine would POST @ 1.6Ghz :D and ran rock solid at 1.54 Ghz. I still have it. Such a classic CPU.

Mine would only do 1.45gig and it was a 1.4gig'r stock, LOL
But then again, when I think about the crappy cooler I was using, I wish I had my Vantec TMD back then.

I've done several pencil unlocks on these but prefer to use defroster repair paint for a more durable solution and then cover it all up with a dab of clear nail polish to keep it stable.

I still keep my 1G AXIA ready to roll at all times. With an Iwill KK266R, an Alpha PAL 6035 with a 38x60 Delta screamer, and three sticks of Mushkin 3+ PC133 I could get it to boot to the desktop at 1620 and actually run at 1608 with the vcore pumped up to 2.1 and the memory running at 2.8v. At normal vcore ranges 1520 or so was the stable max, but the 24/7 sweet spot was in the 1460-1485 range. Still one of the greatest cpus ever.
