Can't seem to find a decent wireless router

Ok, let me clarify one thing first. I have a Netgear WR614 wireless router and although I haven't been really happy with it, 4 to 5 drops a night is ok with me. (Yeah, believe it or not). But ever since I moved to this new place, the wireless connection becomes so spotty that I just couldn't stand it anymore. And not only that, the wired connection to my desktop becomes spotty too! I took the router out and everything works fine again. So I thought it's time for a better wireless router. I did my research and read all the good things about Linksys, I was ready to buy it from amazon until I find out the newest version (v5) is the model to avoid 🙁 I am not really advanced, I just need a wireless router that works and won't F up my wired connection. Is it too much to ask for?

Anyway, what do you think could cause my wired connection to be spotty? Is it hardware or software problem? Will a change in the setting fix it? And also, should I buy the WRT54G or WRT54GL? I know you guys prefer the GL, but based on my description above, do you think even a v5 WRT54G will be enough to do the job? I don't plan on hacking firmware.

Thanks in advance.

What's the difference between access point and wireless router? Aren't most wireless router has access point feature built-in already? Sorry for the novice question.

Can't seem to find a decent wireless router.
In my various systems, I use Routers made by SMC Netgear D-Link Buffalo, Belkin, and Linksys. Very seldom, I encounter any of the Bizarre phenomenons that are seen in various Network Forums.

The Wired aspect.

1. Put temporarily one computer directly onto the Internet modem and use it for a while to make sure that it is the Router.
2. Be straight forward and report what actually is done with the system.

It is quite common that people that are complaining about their Router are engaging in activities (like heavy BT and gaming simultaneously on few computers) that entry level Router coupled with Entry Level Internet connection did not meant to support.

The Wireless aspect.

While some aspects of Computing and simple Networking are relatively easy to comprehend without engineering knowledge Wireless, technology added a new level that is currently beyond the reach of average users.

When I see a remark like ?But ever since I moved to this new place, the wireless connection becomes so spotty that I just couldn't stand it anymore?. The first thing that popes into mind id Signal Noise. The new location is probably more ?Noisy? then the previous one and this interfere with the signal.

The following id a collection of pages that might help solve the problem.

I did try your suggestion 1, I disconnect the router and connect the computer directly back to dsl modem and it works again. That's why I am thinking it could be the wireless router problem. I mean...even if the wireless capacity doesn't work, the wired connection should still work, right?

Anyway, regarding to linksys wireless router, do you know which model has more memory? GL or GS? GL is supposed to have more memory than G but so does GS...so which has more?

IHAVEAQUESTION, check www.linksysinfo.org. The short answer is, it's a mess, specific to the version number of the router. At this point, the GL's extra cost is the price you pay to not be locked into the proprietary firmware.

I'd also suggest looking at your client adapter and wireless settings. For example, the Windows wireless support is amazingly stupid, it likes to flip between seeing the AP and not seeing the AP, for no good reason. Sometimes the adapter vendor's proprietary config utility works better than the Windows built-in stuff. And sometimes not.

FWIW, I've always had good luck with ZyXel wireless routers. I've got a ZyXel Prestige 334W and it works great. I've never had a problem with it.

Just offering this up in case you start looking at another brand.

After many problems with my old netgear router (dropping connections many times daily) I switched to a linksys dual band WRT55AG and I am very happy with it. It only locks about 1 a week and that's not bad at all with me!
