Can't see two drives at the same time!

I've recently installed a Maxtor DiamondMax+ 60GB drive along with my old Maxtor 12GB drive. Unfortunatley, I can only read the drive I boot up with. The BIOS sees both of the fine, but Windows Me just refuses to see the both. On my 12GB drive, I have EZBIOS installed because my motherboard at the time could only read up to 8GB. Since then I have upgraded my motherboard which can read the drives without it. Does anyone know away to get Windows to see them both? Could EZBIOS be causing this? I need to copy over 10GB of files, and this would take forever using CD-RWs!

what mb do you have?
try booting into dos if you can see both drives, try partitioning your 60G drive or reinstalling win. and if you don't need ezbios anymore, don't use it.

you may not have the same issue that i had, but i had the same problems when i tried to install a maxtor 60GB (that it appeared in BIOS but wasn't recognized in windows). now i don't know what EZBIOS is, but for windows to recognize the drive, you have to format it first. and unfortunately i don't know how to do that in WinME, only 2k and XP.

but in 2k and XP it's under the control panel under administrative tools and then computer management and then disk management. you'll likely see the other drive and in order to be able to use it you'll have to format it.

so i guess boot of your 12GB and then format the 60 and copy over, then go from there? i wouldn't know how else to do it...

tell me if you figure it out

if its a new drive from the shop out of the box chances are it has never been partitioned

you need to fdisk the drive create a partition and then format the little begger

***WARNING WARNING****

IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE AND WANT TO GIVE IT A SHOT THEN PULL THE POWER LEAD OUT OF YOUR 12GB DRIVE...... this will stop it being detected and stop you fdisking the wrong drive and loosing all your data..

so 12gb drive is unplugged only drive connected it the 60gb

boot from 98se or ME floppy when @ an A: prompt type

fdisk >
say yes to large disk support

press 1

press 1 to create primary dos partition " after its checked the drive it will say how much do you want the partition to be just press enter if you want a big old 60gb drive"

when done it will check drive again then ask you if you want to make it an active partition "SAY NO"

then it will say press esc to exit and then tell you to reboot once done boot to floppy disk again and you get to the A: prompt again type

format c:

once done shut down put power lead back into 12gb drive and switch pc back on once in windows you will see the new 60gb drive......

**** now this is all from memory so if i have missed a bit or made a mistake please correct me *****

Erm... I don't think I made myself clear. I have already formatted and installed the new drive and installed Windows on it. I can boot up Windows on either drive by selecting it in the BIOS, but whichever I select, the other drive can't be seen when Windows boots up. I might try booting up from a floppy to see if DOS can see them both. The strange thing is, in the device manager there are two drivers for 'Generic IDE Hard drive'. Anyway I am still copying stuff with CD-RW discs at the moment, if anyone knows anything please post a reply here!

Thanks for your posts and stuff, nice of you to bother, but I built my PC so I know how to install stuff properley.

P.S. I use MaxBlast to format my drives, it is much better than FDISK and has an easy to use GUI.
