Can't "See" my router.

My network is not working properly and I think it's my modem and my router are both fighting for DHCP and the modem is winning. Anyway, ipconfig/all tells me that I'm not getting dummy IPs, they're the "real" IPs, and I'm sitting wide open. And I think it's as if I'm not using a router. I need to get into my router config settings to assign static IPs to the 2 computers on my network.

I tried typing 192.168.0.1 into my browser (which is how I used to get in) and I get nothing. I also tried the "Default Gateway" address given in ipconfig/all.

How can I get into my router settings?

LOL. Quote: "Can't "See" my router".

Switch On the light in the room.

==================================
If you connected your system correctly, the Modem (On the WAN port) and the LAN can not compete on the same DHCP they are on separated sides by nature...

I would suggest that you should disconnect the Cable Modem and start with configuring your Network to make sure that you have a functional LAN. Once you have a functional LAN you should add the Internet.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Setting and Sharing.

EDIT: OH!! I didn't see that you actually replied, I thought that was your sig. :)

I'll check that site out - but I should have explained this better in my original post:

I meant that my network has been screwy lately - different things not working at different times.
CURRENTLY my network is up (sharing files etc.) and my internet connection is up. The problem is that I can't access my router settings. This and the fact that it's not assigning me a dummy IP (it's not giving my computers 192.168.x.x numbers) leads me to believe that it's like I'm not going through the router at all.

Also there's a parallel port on my router and my printer is plugged in there - that's not working.

I just realized that my modem isn't plugged into the WAN porty on my router, it's plugged into 1, and then goes out 2. What should it be?

ok,
first 192.168.xxx.xxx is not a dummy ip, but rather a "private" ip....this should be what you want, as most cable providers only provide you with 1 "public" ip
the first thing you should do, is plug your modem into the "wan" port, as previously suggested. Then power down your router, and cable modem for 30 seconds, and power them back up. once that is done, reboot and computers that are up and running....
if my guess is right, this should get you back up and running

Thanks for the clarification on the terms.

With the resetting, I've done this many times. I turn off both PCs, unplug my switch (I know I don't need to, it just makes me feel better :)) unplug my router and then unplug my modem. I wait 30+ seconds and turn everything back on in the reverse order.

Would buying a new Router solve my problem? If so, I'd like to do that. I've been trying to get my network to fully work for waaaay too long now and that would be much easier. I would probably just head on over to BestBuy and pick up this. Is that acceptable?

Thanks.

There is probably a reallt small reset button on the back of the router that can be used to reset it to the default settings. This should allow you to log back into it. I have a Belkin router that worked fine for months, then suddenly wouldn't enable DHCP anymore. There was a flash upgrade for it on Belkin's site that I used. It restored everything to normal.
