can't see desktop with vista home basic

My computer will boot up just fine into the login screen, but once I login to vista, all that shows is the mydocuments window open with a black desktop behind it. I can navigate from folder to folder in that window, but that's the only thing I can see.

Tried to use vista's startup check and system recovery to no avail.. I think what's causing the problem is a trojan/virus downloaded from bittorrent since i had just downloaded a few torrents just before the problem started to help with my other computer which I'm also having problems with.
 
Sounds like a virus is a good possibility. Can you ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the task manager and see if there is anything running that shouldn't be?
 
i actually was able to get system restore to work and rolled my drive back to before i was having problems... now i just need a good anti-virus program
