I have a Ricoh 6x4x24 CD burner and am using Adaptec EZ CD Creator with Win98 original. First off it started to not be able to burn Cd's at 6x anymore then it dropped again from 4x to 2x and burns fine at 2x but after the burn I can't see anything on the disc either thru the burner or my Toshiba 4.8x DVD-ROM. I did a search on the archived threads and found that the decrease in burn speed may have been do to the lubrication drying up on the laser rails so I opened it up this morning and used vaseline to re-lubricate the rail then reassembled he drive and put it back into the computer and did a test burn. It would only burn at 2x this first time but I read that it may take a couple more burns before it gets back up to speed.

My question now is that after doing the lubrication and the test burn I still can't see the burned disc (not only the files but the CD) So does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it or is my drive of almost 2yrs needing replaced :( ?

my guess is it needs to be replaced... i could be wrong and there is a fix for it.. but with those nice 24X TDKs coming out.... isn't it time for a upgrade... and that means the 8x and 12x's should come down in price.... so its a win-win situation.... with both wins going to who? the answer is YOU!!!

Well, I was hoping to dump $$$ into triple 19" monitors instead of replacing a less than 2yr old burner :| anyone else have input?

I don't believe so, I think it was a one year thing also since I opened the box that would have voided the warrenty anyway :p I was hoping that would fix it.
