Can't search for networked computers in Win2k

Basically I just built a computer with parts I have laying around. I installed Windows 2000 Professional on to the system and am using a generic 10/100 NIC. I don't think it's a hardware problem since I have internet connectivity through the NIC (using cable). Whenever I type in a computer's name into the search window and press enter, nothing happens. I can see this computer on the network from a different computer but not use this computer to find others on my network. This has never happened to me before.
 
I haven't had much time in the last few months to play around with my network, so I am also curious to know the answer.
