Can't save settings in BIOS

Turn on machine and I get 'CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded' hit F1 or DEL. I hit F1 and the computer loads into the O/S options. No biggie there.

However, if I hit DEL, I get into the BIOS. At this point if I do nothing else but Save & Exit, the system won't turn back on; blank screen, have to reset pins.

MB=Abit KV7
CPU=Athlon XP Palomino 1140MHz
RAM=2x 512MB 400MHz DDRKVR400X64C3A/512

Utimately I want to change the boot device options, but I can't make any changes to the bios to do so. I have tried many combinations of the FSB/Multiplier/DDR Speed, etc. Same thing, won't boot each time. It obviously will boot, I just have to figure what the system is using when it does. I have also tried the Fail-Safe and Optimized settings, same thing.

Anyone want to throw their two cents in?
