Can't save .jpg as anything but a .bmp?!?

I am using WinXP Pro, and I used to save .jpg pics off the web all the time, but suddenly when I go to save a .jpg it only allows me to save it as an untitled bitmap (.bmp). The only way I can force it to save the .jpg as a .jpg is if I title it and add the extention .jpg manually. The second box with the pulldown menu where it says file type only allows for bitmap and it has to be edited in the first box with the title.

This has got to be a simple setting somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it! Please help.
 
Yes - that's the fix - it has to be done periodically. When full, it fixes ALL images as BMP, even animated GIFs - and they don't work. It's a good idea to clean those files every month.
