can't run windows update

I'm having a problem running windows update on some xp boxes and also some 2k3 domain controllers. I'm a a domain administrator and when I try to run windows update it tells me that only administrators can run windows update. If I log into a member server as the local admin and not with my domain admin account I can run windows update. On the other hand if I log into a xp worksation as a local admin I can't run windows update. Has anyone seen this before

UPDATE
I just created a new domain admin acount for mystelf now I can run windows update on a xp box, but I still can't run it on a server.
