Can't run K7S5A at 266FSB...I'm at a loss.

Ok...I need help. Put together a K7S5A w/ TBird 1.4 266 w/ AYHJA stepping. Running Micron PC133 SDRAM (yeah, I know, working on getting DDR). Here's the problem...if I run the PC for more than a minute or so at a 133 (266) it looks up tight. I can't even make it very far into the 3DMark benchmark...it even locks up if I'm just using IE. I don't think it is a heat issue...CPU is running between 118-120F. Power supply is a 350W AMD Approved Sparkle. If I knock the CPU down to a 100(200) FSB then it runs fine. I've even ran the CPU at 100 and the RAM at 100 & 133 (CAS3) just to make sure the RAM was running fine (which it has been running fine in another machine for the last 11 months). Does anyone have any ideas? Bad CPU or mobo?

Thanks for any advice!
Tom

Look here there are alot of users of this board. I'm sure if you read the FAQ you'll find what your looking for. All of the latest bios is there as well.

Ok, this is gonna sound crazy....but I'm just not convinced it is a hardware problem. This is what I've done:

1) Set the PC to 266FSB
2) Built a batch file in DOS to constantly look doing a full dir /s on both 40GB drives installed in the machine. I let this loop for about 30 minutes. The machine would not even run stable in W98 for 2 minutes so I figure that since it was constantly processing and didn't lock up in DOS that was a good sign.
3) Currently I'm reinstalling W2K. Still got the PC at 266FSB and I'm about halfway through the install process and so far so good.

I think (or at least I hope) that the problem was just going from a 133FSB and a VIA chipset to a 266FSB and SiS.

Please post any more comments if you have them!

Both runs at an FSB of 133mhz (effectively 266 FSB because its a DDR bus).

You should always do a fresh install of Winbloze after swapping mainboards. VIA corrupts the hell out of everything, all those 4-in-1 "fixes" and drivers. Start over, preferably with XP.

tomstevens26.... wow.. your problem sounds a lot like mine.. I just replaced my old epox/1ghz athlon with a ECS k7s5a/Althlon 1600+.. I replaced my existing board/cpu.. I also am running PC133 and the board is set for 266, and have set the reloaded Win98 + WinXP. but when I went and put the computer case back inside my desk (with the side of the case off), the machine started to freeze up.. up until even after I reboot, it would not even make it through the bios checks. I thought it was a heat issue (but the built in temp sensor you get in the BIOS, showed the the machine frooze around 50c). this was just last night, have you found a solution? I guess I should try removing one of my Sdrams, I have one 512mb, and one 256mb. and see if that fixes it. but during the windows installs, the machine ran fine. that took over 2-3 hours to complete my installs. it was only putting my computer back inside my desk that it started to freeze up.
any body know what what setting you should have for PC133?

tomstevens26.... not sure about your system, but I normally leave the sides off my of computer case, and the whole thing gets put into wood cabinet (with front a door, what when closed hides the case). I built a similar system, ECS K7S5A/Athlon 1600+, 512mb crucial pc133. I have a powermax 500watt powersupply (because I also have 6 hardrives, cdrw, DVDrom, 3 case fans). I installed the motherboard inside an existing system (replacing my EPOX/Athlon 1ghz), that was running great for about 10 months. during the install, I only had 2 harddrives, and the CDRW installed, an the unit was sitting outside of my cabinet. everthing ran fine, I installed Windows98 and WinXP Pro. again no problems, this took about 2 hours. I then installed all my harddrives, and the DVDrom, and put the case back into my cabinet. within 15 minutes, the system started to lock up, even when I was in the BIOS, checking the temps and voltages. i even pulled it out of my cabinet, and still it locks up. I reset, in the BIOS, the cpu and memory to run at 100. it seems to run fine, as long as it is out of my cabinet.
I have since contacted Crucial, and found out what the SDR memory settings should be for my PC133, cas=3 memory. I have installed a fan on top of the SIS chipset. reset the cpu/memory to run @ 133. and the system is stable, and runs fine, as long as it is outside of my case. put it back in my case, and it locks up.
I am getting the feeling my problem is heat/power supply related. meaning, maybe the heat, of what I don't know, causing my powersupply to vary its voltages/amps too much, or the heat is causing things to draw too much AMPs, thus causing the unit to lock up.
I am going to try to add another powersupply to my system (I have an extra 300watt), and let it take some of the load (connect some of my harddrives and fans to it). Its an ATX powersupply, and I think I can rig it to turn on when power is supplied to it. my current powersupply has the ability to power a monitor (plug on the back of powersupply, above the regular A/C plug), so I plan to connect the second powersupply to that, so when I turn on my system, it turns on my other powersupply. I also plan to add 2 5" A/C fans to my cabinet, one to suck air in, on to push it out.

I will keep you informed. if you want, let me know. otherwise i might not bother to update.

have you resolved this issue...if not email me a jjenkins@hot.rr.com

I have your answer...

<< You may reinstall Windows as many times as you want, bugs are abound with most SiS chipsets. If it locks up, nothing but a board change will help, believe me! >>

Not true....in this case but it will require some soldering....
