I have a new Planar PL201 that is 1600x1200 native. Matrox says the G550 suppports this resolution but the highest selectable option is 1280x1024 and I can't find a way to force it. As nice as this screen looks at that res I bought it to run at native.

I tried to force it through Powerstrip, but it just went back. I am using the DVI.

Thoughts please!

yeah, I've just figured that out :(

It runs higher res in analog mode and I just tried that - whoa; gruesome. I'm at a loss to understand why matrox calls its 1600x1200 "supported", it was truly horrible on this screen, much worse than 1280x1024 which is scaled.

So, any suggestions for decent new card? I wouild like to run 1600x1200 in DVI mode, I'm not much of a gamer so all the coolest 3D features are a bit lost on me. Since I blew my wad on this monitor I just as soon as not plunk down heavy $ for a card, BUT no sense in having a great screen if you can't run it.

Thanks for your comments.

You could get a ATi 8500 which can give 1600x1200 in DVI mode.
It's fairly cheap now. Since you are not a gamer, the 2D capacity should be able handle your needs.

Sapphire RADEON 8500LE 128MB DDR AGP TVO/DVI (OEM) $77

does that seem reasonable? Is there anything in a retail pkg I need since I have a DVI cable already?

Nope, if you've already got the DVI cable, you should be good to go.

I only suggested the Matrox P-series in case you wanted to keep your DualHead environment going.

Let us know how it turns out. :)

with 20" I don't seem to need DualHead, M4H :) I would like to feel confident that the 1600x1200 is 'real' and not the fainted hearted jest of the G550. The ATI does seem a step up from the G550 specs as long as they haven't neglected the 2D section.

Thanks for the input.

Don't need dualhead? You've obviously never tried. :D While one monitor may be stunning, two has many uses. Just beware - it's addictive. :)

ATI is certainly my second choice for 2D behind Matrox. You'll be more than happy with the upgrade.

I did hook up my PL201and Viewsonic VG191 with the G550 - no matter how much stuff I had going on it didn't look like I was busy. Left me feeling like an under-performer! So, as you suggest, best to nip that in the bud! :D:beer:
