Can't resume from S3 sleep

Hi all,

I need help fixing a standby issue with my Gigabyte GA-EG31MF-S2 board.

This board supports two sleep states, S1 (Power On Suspend) and S3 (Suspend to RAM), which is the default. S1 works but is not ideal because the fans and possibly other components remain on, and the system therefore doesn't conserve as much power as it could.

S3 works too, but the problem is that I am unable to resume from this mode by moving or clicking the mouse or pressing a key. Only pressing the power button works, but that's so awkward that one might as well fall back to S1.

My configuration is as follows:

Said board with latest BIOS version, all at stock settings
E8400
2 x A-Data Vitesta DDR2-800 1.8V DIMMs (tried single channel too)
WD10EACS
LG DVDRW (tried without it)
PS/2 keyboard
MX518 mouse (tried a PS/2 mouse too)
Enermax PRO82 425W (tried the 525W model too)
XP SP3

I've just been to a neighbor who bought a new PC which also uses a Gigabyte board. The model is GA-945GCM-S2L (or C), and the hardware is entirely different. His BIOS, like mine, offers both S1 and S3 modes, but curiously defaults to S1. I tried to resuming from S3 on his system, and the same issue occurred.

Is anyone else having this problem? I don't suppose a permanent fix is available?

Sorry for your problems.

In Vista if you travel to Control Panel --- > Power Options and plow through the Energy Star Advanced settings there are multiple drop down options pertaining to sleep functions. Verify that these settings do not conflict with your BIOS sleep state.

IIRC there is a specific 'drop down' pertaining to the power button - maybe you can force keyboard/mouse 'Resume' by manipulating this setting.

I currently have XP and Win 7 (64) Beta which I installed today. I can install Vista 32 for further testing. I'll run some tests and report back.

I checked the Power Options dialog in XP, but couldn't find a setting related to Energy Star or sleep states, so I'm not sure if the current OS setting conflicts with the BIOS setting.

The Advanced Power Options dialog in Win 7 seems far more customizable, but again does not make a distinction between sleep states.

I'm pleased to say that resume by USB works here in Win 7. If I press a key or click the left mouse button the system wakes without issues. It still doesn't work under XP, however. I noticed that the setting in Win 7 that determines whether a USB mouse or keyboard can wake the system is found in the device's property sheet in Device Manager, under the Power Management tab. It is called "Allow this device to wake the system." In XP this tab is visible only when BIOS is configured to S1, but not when it is at S3. Any idea why it hides by default and how to bring it back?

I didn't have as much luck with PS/2 peripherals. They're completely unresponsive during S3 under either XP or Win 7. Only exception to this is the keyboard's "power" button, which if I set the BIOS to wake by "Keyboard 98", allows me to power on the system and resume from S3. But that's about it. Is this behavior common in Gigabyte boards?

MCE Standby Tool fixed resume by USB under XP. Although it didn't unhide the Power Management tab for my USB devices, it apparently ticked the wakeup checkbox under the hood. The tool is resident but I've uninstalled it and the settings still hold.

Still no luck with PS/2, but that may be out of my hands. If anyone has been able to get PS/2 devices to wake a Gigabyte board from S3, I'll be happy to hear.
