cant repair windows

i turned on my desktop, it says system32 (something or other) file is missing and windows cant start, insert windows disk and attempt to repair

i do exactly that, making the cdrom my first boot device, but windows setup doesnt start. instead, it goes back to the same screen....

ideas?

Watch carefully as it starts up. It will say, "Press any key to boot from CD-ROM". If you let this timeout, it will default to your hard drive.

ok, i only has a usb keyboard. is it possible that at the time of boot, it doesnt recognize the usb and thus pushing the button has no effect???

It's possible. Try grabbing a USB-PS2 adapter, you probably have one that came with a mouse or even the keyboard lying around somewhere. Or go into the BIOS and disable the option to boot from HDD altogether, that might work.
