Windows XP computer
There was some malware infection which included newdotnet and maybe more I do not
know. He had someone else to a remote virus cleanup on the system, but left it in an
unusable state. When I obtained the machine the only symptom is:
-The computer cannot translate a url to an ip address.
With the hard drive connected to another computer, Kaspersky 2009 finds no bad files.
Hijackthis shows no irregularities. Combofix, though, stalls after the message of completing
stage 4.
Every attempt I'm aware of to correct the network has failed, netsh int ip reset, netsh
winsock reset, reinstall network drivers, reinstall tcp/ip protocal, various utilities off the
web to correct LSP, Winsock, or other errors pertaining to this symptom.
(after a backup) a repair install of Windows results in the first time the computer stalling
during the Windows logo, then a start into safe mode worked, then trying normal mode
stalling whenever the activation wizard tried to open.
I'm all out of ideas.
Thanks.
