Can't remove Recent Documents from XP "Classic" Start menu

I've always preferred not to have the Recent Documents in the Start menu. With Win2K it was easy to remove it, although I don't remember how it was done. I recently installed XP Pro, and there's a checkbox in the Start Menu properties, but not if you select the Windows Classic version. I've searched XP Help, lots of "Windows Tips" sites, tried all the Registry settings, tried the gpedit.msc, everything I can find, and it just won't go away.

In the Classic version of Start Menu it's named "Documents"

Am I missing something?

So you already tried gpedit.msc...

User Configuration----> Administrative Templates---->Start Menu and Taskbar--->Remove Documents Menu from Start Menu ---->set to Enabled

Then restart windows.

You can also remove it using TweakUI from Microsoft. The setting is found on the Explorer Tab:

Allow Recent Documents on the Start Menu

I did the gpedit thing and it did not work. Totally surprised me. Enabled and restarted windows.

TweakUI - I had that long ago in W95, had forgotten it. That worked. I would like to know the Registry item it changed. But . . . working is good.

X-setup perhaps?
Scroll down about halfway. This is their last freeware version.

Appearance -> Start Menu -> Windows XP -> Classic Start Menu -> Visible Items

Uncheck what you don't want. Some changes require a restart.
