Can't Reformat...

Plain and simple.

I've been popping burned music CDs thinking they were just blank, then throwing them away.

Today I put in a Windows XP Pro CD and it doesn't read it. So I figure it's just the CD Drive.

But a USB External DVD-RW drive doesn't work either, and neither does the floppy drive.
Any idea what this could be? I'm reformatting in hopes of solving my abnormal CPU Usage problem...
Floppy drive doesn't work either... WOW if it's the motherboard.. The bios reads that there is indeed a CD-RW Drive and a floppy drive, as well as my two HDDs.

Rig is -
Opteron 144
Epox 9NPA+ Ultra
1GB Ram
6600GT
Windows XP Pro.

Make yourself a WIN98 bootable diskette (on another system of course) and change your floppy drive to the first boot device in BIOS and see if it will boot to the floppy. If so, there is probably nothing wrong with the floppy drive.

Have you checked for viruses and/or spyware ?

Probably just a bum O/S. Probably time to re-install.

Let us know what the problem turned out to be.

Good luck.

Wpshooter you read my mind :)....I would also check for virus' too just to make sure before you lose everything..if not you could also try to install windows via network.. If you can get some kind of access onto your network from another computer..you can copy all the neccessary files needed for installation onto your computer that is crapped right now via the network connection .. (luckily you still have) and run the setup files from the hard drive..LMK.

I've used Symantec, AntiVir, loads of programs and nothing came up.

As well as 10+ Anti-Malware, Spyware, etc programs.

Is there any way I can check for motherboard functionality on the CD-RW drives?

The DVD-RW via USB doesn't work either..

Hi, If you can't start Windoze then the CD Drivers will not be loaded. Also Safe mode will not load them. The suggestion about the 98 Boot disk is good as it will load the needed drivers and let you run the install CD. There are many Boot Disks available for free download that will also load the CD drivers. Good Luck, Jim
